The Senior Engineer, Mechanical is responsible for the complete engineering development and design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection construction documents associated with new buildings and renovations for consulting design projects, design-build projects, and performance contract projects. The engineer will be responsible for mentoring and training junior engineers and designers. With minimal supervision, the Engineer will work under the direction of the Manager from project conception through construction completion. Associated responsibilities include but are not limited to engineering design and drafting, specification writing, cost estimating, mechanical and plumbing system functional evaluations, report writing, field investigations and construction site visits, observation reports, HVAC load calculations and modeling, hydraulic calculations, and coordination with other trades including electrical, structural, and architectural disciplines. Responsibilities also include performing site visits, energy savings calculations, developing cost budgets, and written descriptions of energy conservation measures in support of performance contract projects.
Role Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for new and renovated building construction on consulting that will be constructed by the Owner’s contractors (traditional engineering consulting services)
Lead and manage the design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for building retrofit construction on design-build and performance contract projects that will be constructed for the Owner
Oversee engineering calculations for equipment and systems sizing for energy efficient design
Conduct studies and analyses of mechanical and plumbing systems documenting the system conditions, presenting cost effective design solutions, and generating reports with recommendations
Maintain an understanding of current technical standards for commercial, industrial and healthcare facilities for energy efficient design
Research and stay abreast of applicable technology and code updates
Cross train office staff with new opportunities and options
Work with the Manager to identify and maintain engineering procedures to improve production efficiency and quality of system design maximizing the Company’s profits while minimizing its risks and liabilities
Perform job site visits to verify and document existing construction conditions and to observe and document the contractor’s work
Generate proposals for engineering and design-build projects based on Owner needs
Detail engineering efforts in tasks and hours
Produce project schedules with tasks and durations
Develop detailed cost budgets for build projects
Be responsible for and track the project cost outcomes including revenue and gross margin for engineering while maintaining project schedules and deliverables
Mentor and train the support staff in conjunction with the Manager
Job Requirements and Experiences:
Undergraduate (BS) degree in mechanical engineering
PE registration as a professional engineer required in one or more states
A Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical systems design to include HVAC, chilled water systems, hot water systems, and steam systems with a minimum of 5 years in healthcare construction
A minimum of 10 years of experience in plumbing systems and fire protection systems is preferred
A minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design-build projects is preferred
Experience in energy analysis to identify, screen, and develop retrofit/energy conservation measures for performance contract and design-build projects is preferred
Able to plan and manage the development and production of permit and contract documents for the construction of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems
Able to interact effectively across organizational boundaries to achieve goals and meet deadlines
Good knowledge of local and national building codes and standards, to include Florida Building Codes, NFPA Codes, USBC LEED standards and ASHRAE 90.1
Building energy use modeling and simulation experience desirable (e.g. eQUEST, HAP, DOE2, Trane Trace, ASHRAE Modified Bin Analysis)
Experience in the overall integration of design engineering, construction, start-up/turnover, and subsequent operation and maintenance of mechanical systems
Strong leadership, verbal, written and interpersonal skills
Engineering, analytical and technical writing skills with attention to detail
Skillful with computer software including word processing and spreadsheet analyses
AutoCAD proficiency and working knowledge of REVIT required
This position is an office-based role with some travel and visits to other RWEA offices and field locations (up to 30% of the time)
Must be able to sit, walk, or stand for long durations of time
