Your role and responsibilities
Strategic Architecture & Solution Design
End-to-End Solution Architecture: Design comprehensive infrastructure solutions that span the IBM zStack, including hardware capacity planning, logical partitioning (LPAR) and operating systems (z/OS, Linux on Z).
Client Advisory: Act as a trusted advisor to C-level executives and IT leaders, translating business goals into mainframe strategies that leverage the latest advancements in security, AI, and hybrid cloud.
Resiliency & Disaster Recovery: Design high-availability and disaster recovery solutions utilizing IBM GDPS, Parallel Sysplex, and advanced Copy Services (Metro Mirror, Global Mirror) to ensure business continuity.
Communicate with IBM WW GDPS Labs and introduce new GDPS technologies and solutions.
Technical Delivery & Implementation (Hardware & Software)
zHardware Lifecycle Management: Lead the planning, installation, and configuration of the latest IBM Z and LinuxONE hardware. This includes creating IODF definitions, using HCD for configuration, and managing the Hardware Management Console (HMC) and Support Element (SE).
Extensive professional knowledge of IBM DS8000, GDPS hyper swap, PPRC, flash copy.
z/OS Systems Programming: Oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of the z/OS operating system. Utilize z/OSMF to implement best practices and manage system parameters (SYS1.PARMLIB, PROCLIB).
Automation: Automate operations using NetView, REXX, and System Automation.
Governance, Security, & Modernization
Security & Compliance: Architect solutions for mainframe security using RACF, ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations. Implement enterprise-wide encryption and secure data access strategies.
Data & AI Integration: Design data virtualization and real-time information-sharing strategies that bring mainframe data into AI and analytics pipelines. Leverage AI on IBM Z for transactional intelligence.
Skills Transfer: Mentor client system programmers and technical staff, delivering knowledge transfer and best-practice guidance to build self-sufficiency.
Client Engagement & Thought Leadership
Pre-Sales Support: Partner with IBM Sales and Business Partners to scope engagements, author Statements of Work (SOWs), and conduct technical solution workshops for up to 10+ stakeholders.
Problem Solving: Lead complex problem analysis and resolution, coordinating with IBM development and support teams to address critical system escalations.
Required technical and professional expertise
Hardware (zHW) Expertise
Deep knowledge of IBM Z processor design, I/O adapters, and physical planning.
Experience with Hardware Management Console (HMC), Support Element (SE), and overall hardware management.
Proficiency with IODF for hardware definition and configuration.
Experience planning and installing new mainframe hardware and upgrades.
Knowledge of DS8000 and TS7700 storage integration, including I/O path management.
Understanding of Linux on Z and container deployment on IBM Z hardware.
Software (zSW) Expertise
Expert-level knowledge of z/OS architecture, Parallel Sysplex, and system concepts.
Extensive experience with z software installation, and maintenance.
Deep expertise in GDPS, Copy Services (Metro/Global Mirror), and DFSMS for storage management.
Experience with NetView, System Automation.
Proficiency in REXX, JCL, and Assembler for automation and system programming.
Working knowledge of RACF, z/OS Connect, and API integration strategies.
Understanding of encryption, PKI, and security best practices on mainframes.
General Experience & Consulting Skills
Experience: 10+ years of industry experience with the IBM Z platform, with at least 5 years in a Solution Architect or Technical Lead role.
Consulting Acumen: Proven ability to lead client workshops, navigate challenging debates, and build relationships from engineers to CxOs.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to simplify complex technical concepts for executive audiences.
Project Management: Familiarity with agile planning and execution, managing delivery timelines, and collaborating across global teams.
Problem Solving: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to troubleshoot complex, less-defined problems independently.
Preferred technical and professional experience
Hands-on experience with IBM z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) for workflow-driven provisioning.
Experience with AIOps, observability tools (Omegamon), and performance monitoring.
Knowledge of cloud services and REST API-driven integration architectures.
