About the job

As a thermal engineer, you design and build the systems at the heart of the world's largest and most powerful computing infrastructure, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning. From the chip to the chiller, you are responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that scales with Google's continued growth. With your technical expertise, you lead and manage follow-up work for Technical Work Network (TWN) team projects, develop product and process improvements, provide consultation to others, and help facilitate training and development.

Our Platforms Infrastructure Engineering team designs and builds the hardware and software technologies that power all of Google's services. Our computational challenges are complex and unique, enabled by cutting-edge custom hardware designed and made in-house. Our Mechanical Product Design Engineering Team members work cross-functionally to design, build, and deploy the latest technology to support the needs of compute, storage, networking, and machine learning hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and influence product design by providing thermal engineering insight into the technology roadmap, identify and scope innovation opportunities and technology risks, contribute to overall system architecture, and optimize Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

  • Design and specify thermal management hardware, including material selection, heat sinks, heat exchangers, air movers, pumps, and all supporting equipment, and work with internal manufacturing teams and external fabrication vendors during the product development cycle.

  • Contribute to overall system architecture from “chip to chiller” with the ability to make interdisciplinary tradeoffs to optimize TCO of overall compute infrastructure.

  • Develop appropriate specifications and test procedures as necessary to ensure desired reliability and performance of electronic equipment; collaborate with, supervise, mentor, and motivate suppliers to design and develop excellent products; and mentor engineers in all aspects of concept development, analysis, design, and specification.
