DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION: This is skilled and semi-skilled work performed in the fabrication, erection, maintenance and repair of electrically operated traffic signal heads, controllers, foundations, conduits, poles and so on. The nature of the work requires considerable strength and agility. Assignments are typically received verbally or through written work orders and are supplemented by plans or diagrams. All work is subject to inspection in progress and upon completion by supervisory personnel. The nature of the work may require employees to work emergency situations at odd hours and to be scheduled for emergency calls during non-working hours. An employee in this class is distinguished from a Traffic Signal Repair Worker I by the former ability to perform more skilled work and the ability to supervise semi-skilled or unskilled workers. When assigned to the City of Syracuse Department of Public Works, employees in this class lead and participate in a variety of tasks involving the fabrication, erection, and maintenance of traffic signs, as well as the painting of road markings. Employees typically perform traffic sign fabrication, erection, and maintenance, along with line painting. Traffic signal installation, maintenance, and repair are not typically performed by this classification, except in emergency situations where highway safety is at risk.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals and their ancillary control devices; or, B. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the maintenance and repair of commercial electronic equipment; or, C. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associates degree in electronic technology or a closely related field.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT: When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment. When required to operate an excavator, possession of Excavator Certification is required in accordance with New York State General Business Law. Certification must be obtained during the probationary period. Training will commence upon appointment. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.
Note: Anyone promoted to this position must undergo a trial period of no less than 30 workdays but not to exceed 90 workdays to ensure that such employee meets the minimum requirement of the position.
