Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job Description Dismantles equipment using hoists, hand and power wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and other mechanic's tools. Inspects parts for damage or excessive wear and verifies that clearance and dimensions of parts such as shafts, bearings, bushings, pins, gears, and rollers meet factory specifications, using gauges such as calipers and micrometers. Diagnoses cause of equipment malfunction or examines equipment to locate inoperative or malfunctioning components: tests units for conformance to specifications under actual or simulated operating conditions using equipment such as voltage testers and hydraulic testing equipment. Repairs and replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings using mechanics hand tools. Rebuilds, repairs or replaces malfunctioning carburetors, generators, starters, etc.; cleans parts by hand using cleaning solutions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associates degree in automotive technology or diesel equipment technology; or, B. Two (2) years of skilled mechanical experience or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, construction equipment or heavy trucks utilizing both gasoline and diesel-powered engines; or, C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
