Description
The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the oversight, configuration, and daily operation of mission-critical IT systems. This role requires a deep understanding of complex enterprise systems, including servers, data storage, virtualization, cloud technologies, and related infrastructure. The incumbent will assign and review the daily work of technical staff, ensure optimal system performance, administer service level agreements, and participate in the full lifecycle of system administration, project management, and vendor management. This position is essential to supporting reliable, secure business technology operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Assign and oversee daily tasks for systems administration staff, providing mentorship and technical leadership.
Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot operating system workstations (Windows and Linux), servers (Microsoft 2016/2019/2022), storage area networks (SAN), and data storage devices to support business processing requirements.
Administer on-premises and cloud-based Microsoft Exchange environments, manage mailboxes, shared mailboxes, distribution lists, and permissions.
Manage and automate Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, DNS, DHCP, and user/computer provisioning; leverage scripting (e.g., PowerShell) for task automation.
Oversee VMware vCenter / vSphere environments, including provisioning new virtual machines, managing server resources, and supporting patch and update activities.
Configure and manage print servers, server backups, and disaster recovery solutions; monitor and remediate hardware issues across supported server platforms.
Develop and enforce service level agreements, monitor system performance, and proactively tune systems for high availability and reliability.
Lead or participate in IT projects from design through implementation, ensuring compliance with best practices and business objectives.
Administer vendor contracts related to infrastructure systems and liaise with external providers for escalation and support matters.
Provide tier III escalation support for incidents and requests across supported systems, maintaining detailed documentation and change management protocols.
Ensure security policies and practices are applied across all administered systems, including patching, vulnerability assessment, and compliance monitoring.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience:
Associate’s Degree in Information Technology, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field, AND a minimum of five (5) years of progressive IT experience directly related to systems administration and the technologies listed above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties.
Additional education cannot substitute for the required experience.
Technical Skills & Experience (as evidenced in the supplemental questions):
Demonstrated experience as a Senior Systems Administrator (describe number of years and environments).
SAN storage configuration and management.
Exchange on-premises and Online administration, mailbox and permission management.
Linux environment management, including specific versions.
Active Directory management at both user and object level; scripting automation experience (preferably PowerShell).
Print server and Group Policy Objects administration.
VMware vCenter/vSphere 7.0 or higher—virtual server provisioning and management.
Server hardware troubleshooting, software/script-based remote installations, and server backup management (please specify tools/hardware).
Application of Microsoft server and security updates with appropriate validation/testing procedures.
DNS, DHCP, NTFS, and Share permissions management.
Azure AD Connect configuration and management.
General scripting/automation for routine IT processes.
