City of Sunbury Code Enforcement Officer in Sunbury, Pennsylvania

The City of Sunbury Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for enforcing local ordinances and regulations related to property maintenance, zoning, public nuisances, health and safety, and other municipal codes. This position investigates complaints, conducts inspections, and works with residents, business owners, and other departments to ensure compliance and maintain the quality of life within the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Investigate and respond to complaints regarding potential code violations (e.g., property maintenance, zoning, signage, waste, noise, and nuisance issues).
  • Conduct field inspections of residential, commercial, and public properties to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances.
  • Issue notices of violation, citations, and other enforcement documents in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.
  • Maintain detailed inspection records, reports, photographs, and case documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with property owners, tenants, and the public to explain code requirements and compliance procedures.
  • Attend court hearings, administrative proceedings, or council meetings as required.
  • Collaborate with building, planning, fire, and police departments on code-related matters.
  • Perform follow-up inspections to verify corrective actions.
  • Assist in drafting and updating local ordinances and policies related to code enforcement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Knowledge of municipal codes, zoning regulations, and inspection procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Certified Code Enforcement Officer (CCEO), Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a municipal government setting.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish or other languages) desirable

Working Conditions

  • Work performed in both office and field environments.
  • Exposure to outdoor elements, including varying weather conditions and potential hazards.
  • May require evening or weekend work in response to urgent code matters
