Job Title: Pipe Welder

Job Description

This role focuses on performing high-quality multi-pass pipe welding in all positions on carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel materials using SMAW and GTAW processes. You will interpret blueprints and drawings, select appropriate welding methods and equipment, and set up components to meet precise specifications for industrial and construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform multi-pass fillet and butt welds in all positions using the SMAW process.

  • Fuse inserts and weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe using both SMAW and GTAW (TIG) processes.

  • Execute mirror welding using SMAW and GTAW processes where required.

  • Set up components for welding according to specifications, including cutting material with powered saws to match measurements.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and measurements to plan layout and welding procedures.

  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment, process, and method based on job and material requirements.

  • Use fillet gauges, butt gauges, and a six-inch scale to verify weld size, fit-up, and alignment.

  • Operate an oxygen/propane heating torch safely for preheating or other heating requirements.

  • Follow OSHA regulations and safety practices related to the shipbuilding and construction industries.

  • Complete and pass required computer-based training modules.

  • Support industrial and construction shutdowns and other project-based work as assigned.

  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and care for tools and equipment.

Essential Skills

  • 2–5 years of TIG (GTAW) and STICK (SMAW) pipe welding experience.

  • At least three years of experience working with pipe and metals using various techniques including electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.

  • Proficiency in multi-pass fillet and butt welds in all positions using the SMAW process.

  • Ability to weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe using SMAW and GTAW processes.

  • Ability to perform mirror welding using SMAW and GTAW processes.

  • Ability to pass a SMAW 6-inch weld test.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and detailed measurements.

  • Ability to determine appropriate welding equipment and methods based on job requirements.

  • Skilled in using fillet gauges, butt gauges, and a six-inch scale for accurate measurement and inspection.

  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations relevant to the shipbuilding industry.

  • Capability to pass required computer-based training.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial pipe welding in construction and shutdown environments.

  • Experience in working with carbon and stainless steel pipe in 6G or similar advanced positions.

  • Comfort working on varied project sites across a regional area.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds.

  • Ability to work overtime and occasional Saturdays when project needs require it.

Work Environment

This position supports construction and industrial projects across the Hampton Roads area, including work on major jobs in Norfolk and other regional sites. You work primarily on active construction projects, often in shipbuilding-related or industrial environments, following OSHA safety regulations. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some Saturdays as needed and frequent opportunities for overtime. Work involves using SMAW and GTAW welding equipment, oxygen/propane heating torches, powered saws, and precision measuring tools such as fillet gauges, butt gauges, and six-inch scales. The role is hands-on and field-based, requiring comfort working in varying site conditions common to construction and industrial settings.

This is a Contract position based out of Suffolk, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
