Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic
Job Description
The Maintenance Mechanic role is a highly skilled position focused on the mechanical and electrical maintenance, repair, and overhaul of light to medium duty packaging and processing equipment, as well as building equipment. You will work largely independently with minimal supervision, using your technical expertise and sound judgment to keep conveyors, blowers, sifters, burners, grinders, packaging machines, labeling and printing equipment, vacuum and hydraulic pumps, forklifts, and air compressors operating safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities
Inspect, repair, and overhaul mechanical drives and motors, pneumatic and hydraulic components, motor control center devices, transport conveyor systems, and rotating, cutting, and grinding equipment.
Troubleshoot, repair, and conduct performance testing on a variety of production machinery to ensure optimal operation and minimal downtime.
Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on facility machinery to reduce breakdowns and extend equipment life.
Troubleshoot and repair motor control centers, electromechanical drives, and sub-electrical panels using volt and amp meters and other appropriate diagnostic tools.
Use micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and other precision instruments to determine working clearances on mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components.
Identify and select proper materials required for repairs, including measuring belts, chains, and fasteners, and accurately completing order forms as required.
Perform machine shop duties such as general metal fabrication, welding, and machining to support equipment repair and modification.
Establish work orders and requisition or order parts needed to complete maintenance and repair tasks.
Requisition shop supplies and equipment such as replacement parts, hardware, lubricants, tools, and testing instruments to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
Provide technical input to help write and maintain standard operating procedures and job safety analyses.
Complete daily maintenance and repair logs accurately and in a timely manner to document work performed and equipment condition.
Perform related maintenance and repair work as assigned or required to support overall plant operations.
Work independently with minimal supervision while applying mechanical and electrical knowledge and exercising considerable independent judgment in the repair, overhaul, and remanufacturing of plant equipment.
Essential Skills
Strong mechanical and electrical skills gained in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul a wide range of equipment including conveyors, pumps, valves, grinders, blowers, sifters, burners, packaging and processing equipment, labeling and printing equipment, forklifts, and air compressors.
Proficiency in mechanical maintenance and electrical maintenance on production and building equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair motor control centers, electromechanical drives, and sub-electrical panels using volt and amp meters.
Skilled in working with pneumatic and hydraulic systems and components.
Ability to perform preventive and predictive maintenance on facility machinery.
Competence using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
Ability to perform general metal fabrication, welding, and machining.
Strong basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to use basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment in maintenance and repair decisions.
Must supply and use own tools for daily work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Vocational or technical certifications, hands-on training, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of relevant military training programs with work-related experience.
Associate degree or 1–2 years of related experience in maintenance or a similar field is desired.
Experience as a maintenance mechanic, millwright, or similar role working with pumps, valves, conveyors, processing equipment, and packaging equipment.
Experience in pipe work and general mechanical maintenance within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
Previous forklift or fork truck driving experience is a plus.
Experience contributing to or developing standard operating procedures and job safety analyses is beneficial.

Work Environment
This role is based in a plant environment that can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The facility is loud, and hearing protection may be required in certain areas. Coffee grinds on the floor are swept daily but can create slippery conditions, so you must remain alert and follow all safety procedures and housekeeping practices. You will work around operating machinery, electrical panels, and industrial equipment, using your own tools along with plant-provided tools, testing instruments, and materials to perform maintenance and repairs.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Suffolk, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $34.00/hr.
