Stony Brook Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology has a Vice Chair for Clinical Research faculty position available at the Associate Professor/Professor Level. Tenure vs. non-tenured depending upon experience and qualifications.

Stony Brook University is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island’s scenic North Shore. Our 1,100-acre campus is home to a diverse community comprised of 25,710 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook Medicine, Suffolk County's only academic medical center and tertiary care provider.

General Responsibilities :

The candidate will provide anesthetic care to patients undergoing surgery or other procedures and will provide consultation before and after the anesthetic procedure. The candidate will be actively engaged in the instruction and/or supervision of medical students, resident physicians and certified registered nurse anesthetists.

Vice Chair for Clinical Research:

Candidate must have a strong track record of peer-reviewed funding in Clinical or translational research, a national/international reputation for research leadership, mentorship, and the ability and desire to develop a strong funded clinical research program. The successful candidate will also have a track record of working with and receiving industry support (pharmaceutical and/or device trials). Duties will include participation and mentorship in departmental activities that pertain to undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and faculty research and education. As a member of the executive team, the candidate will be expected to assist in strategic planning and direction, play an important role in administrative aspects pertaining to the initiation of grant support, design of research projects, and organizational aspects related to the research goals of the entire department. The successful candidate will also have the ability and desire to mentor junior clinical faculty to participate and develop their own research projects leading to potential funding, presentations, abstracts and published manuscripts.

We are searching for outstanding candidates with an innovative research program and a history of extramural (Government i.e., NIH, private foundations and industry) pharmaceutical/device manufacturer funding. Candidates must have history of prior or current research and extramural funding. History of publications in high impact journals. Successful candidates are expected to bring their own vigorous dynamic program that would synergize with the ongoing studies at the Department.

The Department and the School of Medicine have excellent research infrastructure, which includes MRI, PET, CT, microscopy, behavioral, genomics and proteomics equipment and facilities.

Existing Research Resources and Support:

The basic and clinical science divisions of the Department have recently undergone major growth and restructuring, with an expanded focus on basic and clinical neuroscience. There are 7 federally funded basic science investigators and some clinical faculty with research and clinical trials experience. Clinical Research Support includes 4 clinical research coordinators and a full-time statistician. Research interests include, but are not limited to, molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders and chronic pain, adult neurogenesis, learning and memory, brain imaging, mitochondrial dysfunction, ciliopathies, and genomics, investigated on models ranging from Drosophila and frogs to mice and humans.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO (or foreign equivalent) degree

  • Completed an ACGME accredited residency program in Anesthesiology

  • Board Certified in Anesthesiology

  • Licensed, or, eligible for licensure in New York State

  • Proven documented scholarly activities, publications, and research

  • Minimum of 10 years of postgraduate experience with active research funding

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD (or foreign equivalent) in a basic science or related area

  • Proven Leadership training and experience, successful track record of industry funding
