About this Job

The mission of the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is to uphold the law and provide for the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire or explosion, to ensure the safety of our citizens in the constructed environment, to provide equal access to disabled individuals and to promote the efficient use of energy in commercial buildings.

As aState Fire Marshal Deputy, you will conduct inspections of buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with fire safety laws, advise on corrective actions, and provide technical expertise to officials and the public. Deputies may participate in investigations, execute search and arrest warrants, and provide testimony in court. The role also involves responding to emergencies and disasters, evaluating shelters, and working with building owners, contractors, and other stakeholders to promote safety. This position may require carrying firearms and participating in training and response efforts for fire, rescue, hazardous materials, and other emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR

An associate’s degree in any field plus one year of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR

An associate’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire science field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field; OR

A bachelor’s degree in any field.

A certification in an approved area may be substituted for the education and/or experience requirements at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

Observes and practices inspection techniques under close supervision and completes basic inspection reports.

Researches codes and data files for compliance.

May read and interpret construction plans and manufacturers' specifications.

May test various fire and safety systems and conduct evacuation drills.

May discuss corrective actions required for compliance with building owners, facility administrators, contractors, manufacturers, architects, etc.

Attends schools and/or training programs to develop program area expertise and investigative abilities.

Assists other law enforcement agencies in investigations and may provide testimony as necessary.

Trains and responds to man-made or natural disasters or emergencies including, but not limited to: fire, weather, search and rescue, medical, and hazardous material events.

Assists in evaluating and inspecting emergency shelters for occupancy.

Position-Specific Details:

This job posting may be filled anywhere in the State of Louisiana. The domicile (NOTE: domicile in this case only refers to the physical location where you would report to work. This position will require travel within the assigned district and occasionally to areas outside of the domicile, as requested by the Administration.
