About This Position:

The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in Section 51 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Performs bridge construction, bridge fender repair, and bridge repair Statewide which includes working at extreme heights, in/or around water, possible hazardous materials, and nighttime operations or call out for emergencies.

  • Performs a wide variety of tasks such as cutting trees by possibly using man lifts, loading and unloading materials such as creosote timbers, concrete banders, and large culverts and/or equipment, flagging traffic, operating power and/or hand tools, etc.

  • May perform incidental repair and construction tasks such as installation of guardrail, fencing, pipe, catch basins, and drainage structures. May train and/or assist in training lower-level operators or laborers.

  • Prior to equipment operations, conducts routine visual/physical safety inspection of equipment, reports problems to supervisor/appropriate personnel and/or takes necessary corrective action whenever possible.

  • Performs minor repairs, services, preventative maintenance, and cleans equipment in accordance with the operator’s manual and manufacturer’s recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely. Prepares any necessary paperwork (e.g., mileage, oi/gas usage, etc.) as directed.

  • The incumbent may be required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as maintain the following licensing.

  • Will need working knowledge of PDAs, light computer work.

  • May require work involving nighttime operations or call outs for emergencies that occur outside of normal work hours.

  • Lifting: a maximum of 50 pounds will be required, due to servicing equipment, removing debris from roadway, and other routine maintenance work being performed. Manual lifting of more than 50 pounds requires assistance from others.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a as Mobile Equipment Operator 1, 2 or 1 Heavy depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).

Compensation & License Requirements : Below is the starting hourly rate and premium pay amount for each level. All Levels get an additional $2.00 for every hour worked.

  • Mobile Equipment Operator 1 -1,284.80/ biweekly. A valid Class “D” Chauffeur’s License is required before start date

  • Mobile Equipment Operator 2 -1,374.40/ biweekly. A valid Class "A" CDL required before start date

  • Mobile Equipment Operator 1 Heavy - 1,684.00/ biweekly. A valid Class "A" CDL required before start date.

    Work Location: The duty station of this position will be determined by the locale of the incumbent; however, the position may require frequent travel and overnight stays in neighboring parishes.
