Duties:
- Performs advanced clerical, financial, and public-facing duties within the Civil Division of the Berrien County Trial Court.
- Assists in supervising and training clerical staff and serves as office supervisor or Court Clerk II when needed.
- Provides customer service at public and law enforcement counters and by phone; explains court procedures, forms, fees, and schedules.
- Receives and receipts bonds, fines, costs, and other payments; balances funds and maintains related bookkeeping records.
- Enters and updates case information, prepares files and documents, issues notices, and schedules court calendars.
- Accepts pleas in traffic civil infractions and assesses fines and costs as directed by the Judges.
- Ensures accuracy and timely processing of paperwork and reports, including state-mandated caseload and caseflow submissions.
- Assists with record retention and destruction and prepares forms and templates for Court use.

Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in business, office management, liberal arts or criminal justice and a minimum of one year of general clerical experience.
Typing Requirement:
- Must be able to type 40 words per minute net as administered through County Personnel department testing measures. Please contact Personnel by phone or email to schedule a typing test if you have not taken one before with our office. We are unable to process and forward your application until you have taken and successfully passed the typing test at the net speed required for the position.
Special Requirements:
- May be required to obtain state certification as a certified electronic recorder (CER) or certified electronic operator (CEO).
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including drug testing prior to employment.
- A background check will be performed, and employees will be fingerprinted.
- Subject to random alcohol and drug testing.
- May be assigned to work at any Berrien County Trial Court location during the course of employment.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds; reach and bend; and sit/stand for prolonged amounts of time.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- General knowledge of court and legal procedures.
- Experienced in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Able to maintain confidentiality and make decisions according to established procedures, polices and court rules.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with coworkers and the public.
