Duties:
- Provides overall supervision of the design, engineering, and construction of the Berrien County road system.
- Directs the planning, design, and delivery of road, bridge, culvert, and storm sewer projects in compliance with accepted engineering principles, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials standards, and Michigan Department of Transportation guidelines.
- Serves as project engineer for selected local, state, and federally funded projects, including those administered under the township project program.
- Oversees all phases of engineering projects, including field surveys, preliminary and final design, cost estimates, construction drawings, specifications, right-of-way acquisition, bidding documents, construction inspection, pay estimates, material sampling and testing, density testing, and project documentation.
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates engineering activities and project documentation for Road Department work programs.
- Manages construction engineering and quality assurance/quality control processes, monitors contractor performance on federal, state, and local projects, and manages consultants and vendors to ensure contract compliance and performance standards.
- Reviews materials, equipment, and construction methods to achieve efficient, economical, and high-quality infrastructure outcomes. Supervises, trains, hires, and evaluates Engineering Department staff.
- Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies, standards, and performance measures.
- Recommends and reviews soil erosion and sedimentation control practices.
- Oversees bridge and culvert programs, including biannual inspections, condition assessments, and reporting; evaluates infrastructure condition and recommends maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, or replacement projects.
- Represents the Road Department, serves as liaison with related agencies and organizations, and meets with the public and officials to address inquiries, complaints, and project-related issues.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering and ten years of progressively more responsibility at a firm or state and local government agency working in the area of transportation related to road systems.
- Must hold a Professional Engineering License through the state of Michigan or a state recognized by Michigan.
Special Requirements:
- Will be required to obtain Certification as a Storm Water Management Construction Site Operator.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
