Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on creatively designing efficient, cost-effective custom machinery and systems for a wide range of applications. The Mechanical Design Engineer uses 3D CAD tools to develop complete machine designs, collaborates closely with customers and internal teams, and supports projects from concept through installation and commissioning.
Responsibilities
Conduct occasional on-site customer visits to gather pre-design information and understand application requirements.
Create detailed 3D system designs using SolidWorks, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
Communicate directly with customers to clarify and define system parameters, specifications, and performance expectations.
Lead internal and external design review meetings to present concepts, gather feedback, and drive design decisions.
Generate accurate part and assembly drawings that clearly define dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing details.
Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) to support procurement, manufacturing, and assembly activities.
Troubleshoot and develop solutions for issues identified during machine testing, refining designs as needed.
Provide occasional hands-on assistance with in-house machine assembly to ensure design intent is correctly implemented.
Support occasional on-site installation and commissioning of equipment, helping to resolve mechanical and design-related issues.
Collaborate with machining and fabrication teams to ensure designs align with practical manufacturing methods and capabilities.
Essential Skills
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, or equivalent experience in lieu of a degree.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in machine design.
Proficiency in 3D CAD, specifically SolidWorks, for designing custom machinery and systems.
Strong experience in mechanical engineering and mechanical design principles.
Ability to design custom machinery from concept through detailed design using 3D CAD tools.
Familiarity with machining and fabrication processes and the methods used to achieve required part quality and performance.
Experience working in an industrial machining or similar manufacturing environment.
Ability to lead design review meetings and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with industrial machinery design and project-based engineering work.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues during machine testing and refine designs accordingly.
Comfort providing occasional hands-on support for machine assembly, installation, and commissioning.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with customers and internal teams.
Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort working in a dynamic, project-focused environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Springfield, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $47.00 - $54.00/hr.
