General Function

The Associate Provost for Student Success reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the Academic Affairs leadership team. This role provides strategic leadership and coordination for initiatives that advance student persistence, academic and professional achievement, and degree completion. The Associate Provost is accountable for the development, implementation, and continuous evaluation of comprehensive student success and retention strategies within Academic Affairs.

The portfolio encompasses student success efforts from matriculation through graduation, including academic advising, academic support and learning services, the first-year experience, transfer student support, and other targeted support programs. These initiatives are delivered through collaborative, cross-functional partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators and integrate both curricular and co-curricular approaches to enhance student outcomes.

The Associate Provost works closely with the Provost, Deans, Academic Unit Leaders, and leaders within Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, as well as community partners when appropriate, to ensure alignment and shared accountability. The position also oversees academic appeals, including grade appeals and academic integrity, and key academic processes such as transfer credit re-evaluations for General Education.

Additionally, the Associate Provost leads institutional access and retention strategies designed to serve all students and collaborates across the University to advance a coordinated, institution-wide approach to student success.

Description of Primary Duties

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A terminal degree in an appropriate field is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience supporting undergraduate student success is required, including working with underprepared and underserved student populations. Candidates must have effective management of varied programs, budget administration, and personnel oversight. Evidence of commitment to community engagement, cultural competence, and ethical leadership, which are the three pillars of the University’s public affairs mission, is essential.

Skills: Candidates must have the ability to develop and execute a comprehensive vision for student success and development, and to work collaboratively and collegially with university administrators, faculty, staff, and students. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, as is the ability to analyze problems, gather and interpret data, and make informed recommendations and decisions. Additional required competencies include building high performing, student-centered teams; providing proactive, dynamic leadership; and exhibiting interpersonal and organizational skills. Knowledge and experience in student services-related technology and experience with student information systems is preferred. Experience with Ellucian/Banner ERP is preferred.
