Pay Details:

Gas System Installer 2nd Year: $32.21/hour

Gas System Installer Full: $35.45/hour

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Job Description:

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction of Supervisor-Natural Gas Construction or designee, functions as part of a crew, investigates and repairs gas leaks and installs and replaces gas mains, services, or related equipment.

**Gas System Installer Full may direct workers in supervisors absence.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Installs or replaces gas mains and services using required hand tools and equipment.

  2. Fuses plastic pipe and fittings.

  3. Moves gas meters as directed to ensure their accessibility for meter reading or servicing.

  4. Completes daily work reports and submits time reports.

  5. Operates underground piercing tools, paving breaker, air drill, tamper, and other related tools to lay, remove, and replace pipe.

  6. Cleans and rakes trench line, backfills dirt, and spreads sand using hand tools.

  7. May install, disconnect, or remove gas service regulators.

  8. May relight appliances for customers.

  9. Works with CU mobile work management system.

  10. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

**In addition to Gas System Installer – 2nd Year, a Gas System Installer Full has increased ownership in the tasks and responsibilities listed above.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Gas System Installer 2nd Year:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or trade specific training is preferred. Minimum of one-year gas pipeline construction and maintenance experience is required. Two or more years comparable construction and maintenance experience on underground water distribution piping may be considered in lieu of required gas experience.

Gas System Installer Full:

In addition to the Gas System Installer – 2nd Year requirements a Full is required to have technical or trade specific training. Two or more years of recent experience in the construction and maintenance of underground gas distribution piping is required. Two or more recent years comparable construction and maintenance experience on underground water distribution piping may be considered in lieu of up to one year of the required experience.

Licensing/Certification:

• Must possess CU “Operator Qualification” certification or be able to achieve certification within 3 weeks.

• Must have a valid Missouri CDL, Class A including air brakes, OR

a. The ability to obtain a Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within six weeks of employment.

AND

b. The ability to obtain a CDL, Class A including airbrakes within six months of employment. This requires approximately 15 hours (total) classroom training and completion of behind-the-wheel training (hours to be determined) as required by City Utilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic computer knowledge.

Maintain adherence to all company policies.

Working knowledge of:

o The installation of threaded piping and mechanical compression fittings.

o Laying and bedding large diameter pipe.

o Performing heat fusion and electrofusion on plastic piping systems.

o Performing taps.

o Purging gas.

o Installing protective coatings on metallic piping systems to prevent corrosion.

o CU utilized computer systems and tough books.

o CU’s safe working practices and be good examples of it.

Ability to:

o Follow detailed instructions.

o Make mature decisions with or without direct supervision.

o Work courteously with customers and coworkers.

o Show good judgment and be good examples of it to others.

o Bring uncontrolled and potentially hazardous gas conditions under control.

o Be dependable due to the nature of duties of the position and have good attendance.

o Lead other employees in safe work practices.

o Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems. Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.

**In addition to Gas System Installer – 2nd Year, a Gas System Installer Full is expected to have intermediate knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements include: sitting, standing, grasping, bending, crouching, reaching, balancing, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. regularly, 90 pounds occasionally and handle tools and other equipment associated with this position. Must be able to work within the rated capacity of the Utility’s aerial lifts, ladders, fall restraint devices, and other job-related equipment.

Working Conditions:

Works primarily outdoors subject to changing weather conditions. May be exposed to high and low temperatures, air contaminants (e.g., dust, fumes, smoke, toxic conditions), vibration (e.g., tractor, jackhammer), dirty environment, awkward or confining spaces, exposure to dangerous conditions (e.g., moving parts, electrical hazards), wet conditions, and considerable noise. Work includes standing, kneeling, and climbing in and out of crew trucks and excavations, in and around vehicular traffic as well as construction equipment traffic.

Safety Sensitive Position:

A safety-sensitive position involves the performance of duties which may have a direct and immediate impact on the safety of the public and other public employees. This is a safety sensitive position.

Miscellaneous Requirements:

• Must successfully complete gas construction training program for probationary employees.

• Subject to Department of Transportation’s and/or Public Service Commission’s drug and alcohol testing requirements and Gas Operator Qualification requirements.

• Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities, including flame retardant/arc rated clothing. Management retains the right to require replacement due to wear or staining.

• Shift work and/or overtime may be required.

• Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

• Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.

• Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.

Testing may be required.
