Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

Location: Baystate Medical Center – Springfield

Department: Heart & Vascular Operating Room

Schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week

Additional Requirements: Rotating weekends and holidays; call required

About the Heart & Vascular Operating Room

The Heart & Vascular OR at Baystate Medical Center is a specialized, high-acuity surgical environment supporting advanced cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. Position Summary

Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly under surgeon/physician guidance to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.

The Surgical Technologist must possess expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique and demonstrate the ability to combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical processes, instrumentation, and advancing technologies. The Surgical Technologist anticipates the needs of surgeons and/or physicians through constant attention to and assessment of the surgical process and patient condition to promote a safe, efficient, high-quality surgical outcome.

These skills support the performance of minimally invasive, invasive surgical procedures, and invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The Surgical Technologist must be able to function proficiently across a variety of surgical specialty services within the Heart & Vascular environment.

The Surgical Technologist provides patient care primarily through service to the physician/surgeon. The incumbent must understand the procedure being performed, anticipate the needs of the surgical team, and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure while maintaining the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist is accountable for maintaining skills and knowledge commensurate with assignments and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Maintains safety in the operation, management, and inspection of designated equipment and instruments according to manufacturer guidelines and established policies and procedures.

Participates as part of the operating team, demonstrating knowledge of the patient’s history, allergies, and intra-operative care plan.

Demonstrates knowledge in the use of pharmacological agents dispensed to the sterile field, recognizing mixtures, dosages, and labels in accordance with policies and procedures.

Maintains an environment conducive to patient safety and strict aseptic technique.

Accurately completes required documentation within the Surgical Technologist scope of practice.

Meets the requirements of the designated clinical recognition ladder for Surgical Technologist Level I.

Demonstrates skills and knowledge related to sharps safety initiatives.

Demonstrates competency in intra-operative temperature regulation measures.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills in specimen handling and labeling.

Communicates effectively using appropriate medical terminology.

Required Work Experience

  • Graduate of a program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) or completion of a structured surgical technologist training program with professional equivalent credentials.

  • Certification required for new hires without prior experience in a surgical facility before July 1, 2013.
