Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

Anesthesia Technician

Location: Baystate Medical Center - Daly OR

Schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week

Shift: 2nd Shift – 3:00pm–11:00pm

Days: Monday through Friday

Position Summary

The Anesthesia Technician, under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician, performs a variety of routine direct and indirect patient care activities and technical skills in the anesthesia setting in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.

This description reflects the essential functions of the position. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and/or related duties as assigned after demonstrating competency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first line for troubleshooting and maintenance of anesthesia equipment; provide equipment status reports to Clinical Engineering and maintain repair records.

  • Clean and disinfect TEE probes and anesthesia equipment.

  • Prepare the OR for anesthesia, including appropriate IV solutions and fluid warmers based on procedure and/or physician request.

  • Provide anesthesia room set-up, turnover, and technical support for all case types including OB, Centennial, Chestnut Surgery Center, IVF, Cardiac, Trauma, Remote Site, Endoscopy, Cancer Center, and Difficult Airway cases.

  • Support and assist the Difficult Airway Team with preparation and maintenance of airway carts.

  • Maintain continuing education and participate in organizational performance improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain anesthesia supplies and equipment, including ordering and restocking.

  • Perform daily I-Stat Quality Control (Q.C.) and monthly Q.C. on designated anesthesia equipment.

  • Assist with equipment set-up and supplies during emergency situations as directed by the physician and/or RN.

  • Provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of developmental stages for Adults, Adolescents, Children, Infants & Toddlers, and Neonates.

  • Follow proper procedures for anesthesia supplies and equipment, including infection control and body substance precautions.

  • Inspect and evaluate equipment and supplies for safety during cleaning and restocking; remove faulty equipment, label appropriately, and report to Clinical Engineering and Charge RN.

  • Maintain sterile field when assisting with opening sterile supplies and promptly report any breaks in sterile technique.

  • Ensure airway carts are appropriately stocked, maintained, and transported in a timely manner.

  • Participate in staff development and complete all mandatory annual in-service education.

  • Maintain appropriate PAR levels of supplies and demonstrate responsible, cost-conscious resource utilization.

  • Independently set up, maintain, clean, and sterilize anesthesia equipment, including specialty equipment such as blood warmers, TEE probes, anesthesia machines, and difficult airway carts.

  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to perform duties independently or with minimal supervision.

Required Work Experience

  • Demonstrated competency in reading and mathematics, as verified by an aptitude test.

Preferred Work Experience

  • 6 months to 1 year of experience in a hospital setting.
