Role Summary
The Survey Instrument Person / Technician (Entry-Level) serves as the foundational "boots on the ground" for our surveying department. In this role, you are responsible for the accurate collection of spatial data that informs every subsequent stage of an engineering design project. Whether you are clearing a path through dense terrain or operating high-precision GPS equipment, your work ensures that our team and clients have the precise measurements needed to build safely and effectively. This position is ideal for someone who prefers a dynamic outdoor work environment over an office setting and is eager to master the specialized tools of the land surveying profession.
Key Responsibilities
Field Support: Assist in the daily operations of a survey crew, including site preparation, clearing brush, and removing obstructions from survey lines.
Equipment Management: Responsible for the safe loading, unloading, and transport of sensitive survey instrumentation and field supplies (up to 60 lbs).
Data Collection: Learn to operate and maintain advanced measurement instrumentation, including Total Stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, and digital levels to determine precise coordinates and elevations.
Site Documentation: Assist in setting stakes, hubs, and other markers for construction staking and boundary evidence.
Quality Control: Ensure high standards of accuracy in field notes and data collection under the direct supervision of the Crew Chief.
Qualifications & Skills
Technical Literacy: Proficiency with computers and a willingness to learn specialized surveying software.
Operational Excellence: Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow complex instructions and meet project deadlines.
Environmental Adaptability: Proven ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various terrains (urban, wooded, marshland, and active construction sites) and in all weather conditions.
CADD Exposure: Basic familiarity with AutoCAD or hand-drafting techniques.
Construction Experience: Prior experience working on active construction sites or in general labor roles.
Mechanical Aptitude: Basic understanding of equipment operation, calibration, and routine maintenance.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Regularly required to walk, stand, crouch, stoop, and navigate challenging terrain.
Frequent lifting, carrying, and maneuvering of equipment and materials weighing up to 60+ pounds (e.g., monuments, manhole covers, and tripods).
Ability to maintain mobility over rough, uneven, or slippery surfaces for the duration of a shift.
