Structural Engineering Department Head/ Manager

Due to sustained growth and expansion, Boswell is seeking an experienced senior leader to head our Structural Engineering Division at our South Hackensack, NJ headquarters. This is a rare opportunity to shape the direction of our structural practice within a well-established and growing firm. In this role, you will provide strategic and operational leadership to a multidisciplinary team of Project Managers, Design Engineers, drafters, and technical staff, while serving as a trusted partner to our clients. You will drive project excellence, mentor the next generation of engineers, and play a central role in expanding the division’s capabilities and market presence. Given the importance of this leadership position and the collaborative nature of the work, regular in-office presence is essential to foster team culture, quality, and client engagement. Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and management for the Structural Engineering Department, driving performance in alignment with Boswell’s long-term, sustainable growth and success

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a multidisciplinary team of Project Managers, Engineers, and technical staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous professional development

  • Plan and manage staffing strategy: Partner with Talent Acquisition and HR department to continue to attract top talent, and assess performance

  • Oversee delivery of complex roadway and transportation structural projects, including bridges, culverts, and retaining walls, from concept through detailed design, ensuring technical excellence, quality, profitability, schedule performance, and client satisfaction

  • Provide senior technical leadership while serving as a trusted client partner, strengthening long-term relationships, cultivating new opportunities, and positioning the practice for sustained repeat work and strategic growth

  • Drive business development initiatives for Structural Engineering opportunities in coordination with executive leadership, identifying new clients, leading pursuits, and preparing competitive proposals and qualification packages

  • Monitor and manage multiple concurrent projects, ensuring effective staff performance, risk control, and consistent delivery standard

  • Establish, refine, and enforce internal processes, design standards, and quality control systems to improve efficiency, consistency, and technical rigor

  • Manage departmental financial performance, resource planning, and operational execution to support growth targets

  • Collaborate with other departments to deliver integrated engineering solutions across Federal, State, regional, and locally funded infrastructure programs

  • Perform and oversee advanced structural analysis, design, and assessment activities, maintaining the division’s technical leadership and adherence to industry best practices

  • Support field inspections and on-site coordination when required, ensuring alignment between design intent and construction executio

  • Represent Boswell in client meetings, industry engagements, and professional forums, reinforcing the firm’s reputation and market presenc

  • Uphold internal standards, policies, and procedures while driving continuous improvement in operational practices

    Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) in Civil or Structural Engineering, or equivalent

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in New Jersey is required while New York PE is preferred.

  • 15+ years of experience in structural design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and overhead sign structures

  • 10+ years of experience in Project Management

  • Strong experience in the management of consultant agreements, either as a consultant manager or the client

  • Significant experience working with public agencies like the Port Authority of NY and NJ NJDOT, NJTA, NYC Transit, NYCDOT, and NYSDOT

  • Experience working with New Jersey counties and municipalities is preferred.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of codes, standards, and design guidelines (AASHTO, AREMA, ACI, AISC, NYC/NJ standards)

  • Proficiency with structural analysis and modeling software

  • Familiarity with technologies such as BIM

  • Experience with load rating, inspection, and rehabilitation of existing structures

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including technical report preparation/ editing

  • Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage across departments and disciplines

  • Current US work eligibility is required.

    The salary range below is applicable for the job and location associated with this position. Compensation will vary based on specific relevant experience, education, certifications, skill levels, geographic location and other compensable factors.

    Salary Range: $210,000.00 - $225,000.00 / Year
