TITLE: Building Maintenance Mechanic

SALARY: $21.86- $27.93 (Per CSEA Contract)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years of experience in general building maintenance or building trades work. HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Construction experience required.

DUTIES:

  • Monitor building control system;

  • Make repairs;

  • Install equipment;

  • Mow and weed eat

  • Snow removal and as-needed tasks.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

BUILDING MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for the efficient performance of a variety of maintenance and repair tasks for public buildings and facilities. The work is performed under general supervision permitting some leeway for planning technical details of each assignment. Immediate supervision may be exercised over one or more helpers. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Performs general maintenance tasks to include plumbing, pipe fitting, low pressure steam fitting, carpentry, masonry and mechanical repairs;

Services electric motors, lights and related electrical equipment;

Installs and makes minor repairs to electrical systems, nurse call, kitchen appliances and laundry equipment;

Refinishes tile floors and base cover;

Paints interior and exterior surfaces;

Operates boilers and air handling equipment, pumps, air compressors incinerators and other related boiler room equipment;

Assists in the maintenance of sewer and fire sprinkler systems;

May operate computerized controllers for various systems;

Participates in snow removal and ice control activities to include operation of snow plow and salt tractor.

When Assigned to the Chautauqua County Department of Public Works (Airport):

Performs study and reading assignments, observes demonstrations and otherwise learns the techniques of airfield weather observation through an approved program leading to testing to become a Certified Weather Observer;

Assists in the maintenance and repairs of promenades, internal roads, taxi ways, runways and drainage systems;

Assists in the operation of a two-way radio to provide information concerning weather and ground conditions to aircraft and ground control;

Learns and assists in the operation of fire and rescue equipment and aircraft rescue fire fighting duties;

Mows grass, plants and cares for shrubbery and performs other grounds maintenance tasks;

Operates and maintains trucks, snow plows, loaders and tractors as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the practices, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment; mechanical aptitude; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to lay out work for self and others and supervise the work of others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years of experience in general building maintenance or building trades work.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • When assigned to the Chautauqua County Department of Central Services: Possession, at time of appointment and during service in this class, of a valid New York State Class D operators license.

  • When assigned to the Chautauqua County Department of Public Works (Airport): Possession, at time of appointment and during service in this class, of a valid New York State Class D operators license. Possession, of a valid New York State Class B CDL with "X" endorsement and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner, and during service in this class.
