Leidy's Maintenance Mechanic III in Souderton, Pennsylvania

The Maintenance Mechanic III is a senior-level technician responsible for performing advanced troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance on production equipment, refrigeration systems, packaging machinery, and facility infrastructure. This role supports a high-paced meat processing environment, ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining compliance with safety and food-processing standards. The Maintenance Mechanic III also provides mentorship to junior mechanics and supports complex projects and system upgrades.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Equipment Maintenance & Repair

Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues on production and packaging machinery.

Perform skilled maintenance on equipment such as conveyors, grinders, slicers, saws, scales, mixers, vacuum packagers, and refrigeration components.

Conduct advanced troubleshooting using schematics, blueprints, multimeters, and diagnostic tools.

Complete preventive maintenance tasks and recommend improvements to PM schedules.

Assist with installation, modification, and commissioning of new equipment.

Facility & Utility Systems

Support maintenance of facility infrastructure including HVAC, boilers, compressors, utilities, and plumbing related to production.

Monitor and troubleshoot refrigeration units (ammonia or Freon), reporting issues to supervisors or qualified technicians.

Maintain building systems to ensure compliance with USDA, OSHA, and food safety requirements.

Leadership & Documentation

Provide guidance, training, and technical support to Maintenance I and II team members.

Assist in leading maintenance activities during shutdowns, overhauls, and major repairs.

Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and equipment status in the

maintenance management system (CMMS).

Coordinate with production supervisors to minimize downtime and plan maintenance activities.

Safety & Compliance

Follow and enforce all safety procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices).

Ensure repairs meet regulatory standards for a USDA-inspected meat processing facility.

Identify safety hazards and recommend corrective actions.

Continuous Improvement

Recommend process improvements to increase equipment reliability and reduce downtime.

Support root-cause analysis for recurring equipment failures.

Collaborate with engineering, production, and sanitation teams to optimize equipment performance.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or certification preferred.

5+ years of experience as an industrial mechanic in manufacturing (food or meat industry strongly preferred).

Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

Experience with PLC-controlled equipment (troubleshooting preferred; programming a plus).

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.

Welding and fabrication skills (MIG/TIG, stainless steel) preferred.

Strong understanding of LOTO, OSHA standards, and food industry safety practices.

Ability to work in cold environments and handle physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

Office setting within a meat processing facility.

Interaction with multiple departments (HR, Sales, Production, Shipping).

Occasional exposure to colder temperatures when assisting in production-adjacent areas (PPE provided).
