Commission on Aging Substitute Senior Nutrition Meal Cook in Sidney, Montana

Program Overview: The Richland County COA Senior Nutrition Program provides nutritionally balanced meals to seniors throughout Richland County to support their health, independence, and well-being. The program emphasizes both nutritional quality and meal appeal to ensure meals are enjoyable and appropriate for the senior population. Meals served through the Congregate and Home Delivered Meals Programs must meet federal and state funding requirements, including providing at least one-third (1/3) of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for each food group as outlined under Title III of the Older Americans Act. Position Summary: The Substitute Senior Nutrition Meal Cook provides essential support to the Senior Nutrition Program by filling in during scheduled or unscheduled absences of regular kitchen staff. This is an on-call, as-needed position with no guaranteed hours. Work assignments may vary depending on program needs, staffing availability, and site location. When scheduled, the Substitute Cook may assist with or resume responsibility for meal preparation, food service, kitchen sanitation, and program documentation for the Congregate and Home Delivered Meals Programs, serving up to approximately 60 meals per day. This role requires flexibility, reliability, strong food safety practices, and the ability to quickly adapt to different kitchen environments and work teams. The job site varies by each day of the week: • Monday: Fairview • Tuesday: Sidney • Wednesday: Fairview • Thursday: Savage • Thursday: Shop/Prep in Sidney • Friday: Sidney The employee is responsible for reliable transportation to and from all potential work locations. This position requires strong teamwork, organization, attention to food safety, and the ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment while providing excellent service to seniors. Essential Functions: This list is representative, but not all-inclusive. Meal Planning & Preparation: • Prepare, cook, portion, serve, and package meals according to program standards and established menus • Ensure meals meet required Title III nutritional guidelines, including providing at least 1/3 of the RDA • Maintain consistent food quality and presentation • Assist with meal service at congregate dining sites when scheduled Food Safety & Sanitation: • Follow all food safety, preparation, and storage procedures in accordance with local health department regulations and program standards • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kitchen and dining environment • Monitor and record food temperatures and sanitation logs as required • Properly store and rotate food items according to established guidelines Program Support & Documentation: Maintain accurate records related to: o Meal counts o Food temperatures o Sanitation and safety checks o Program documentation • Secure donation boxes when not in use • Submit required paperwork to the COA office when applicable Team Collaboration & Customer Service • Work cooperatively with kitchen staff, volunteers, and COA personnel • Provide courteous, respectful, and welcoming service to senior participants • Help create a positive and supportive dining environment for program participants Additional Responsibilities: While this list is not all-inclusive, these duties may also be assigned: • Assist with grocery shopping and supply restocking when needed • Support inventory management and food organization • Assist in cleaning congregate dining areas following meal service • Assist with Senior Nutrition surveys and MAST forms as requested • Support special COA meals or events when scheduled • Complete recommended Senior Nutrition or food safety trainings • Observe and report concerns regarding participant well-being to COA staff • Represent the COA and its programs in a positive and professional manner • Support and assist the COA with office/administrative tasks as needed • Perform other duties as assigned Physical Dem nds and Working Conditions: This position requires the ability to work in a commercial kitchen environment, including: • Exposure to heat, steam, and hot cooking surfaces • Standing for long periods of time on hard surfaces • Frequent bending, lifting, and reaching • Lifting and carrying items up to 30 pounds • Working in environments with occasional moderate to high noise levels • Interacting with groups of up to 30 or more individuals Work shifts may vary but generally occur between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, depending on staffing needs. Supervision Exercised: This position does not supervise other employees but works collaboratively with regular cook staff, volunteers, and COA personnel.
