Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project Relief Ditch Rider and Canal Maintenance in Sidney, Montana
Summary of Work: Under the supervision of a Job Foreman or Equipment Operator, perform general labor tasks in maintaining, replacing and rehabilitating the facilities, equipment, and features of the Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project. Responsibilities: • Training & Acting as a Relief DitchRider sometimes on weekends when required from April 10th -- September 30th with the Intention of Becoming a full time Ditchrider when position opens. • Helping Prime the canals for irrigation April 15th -- May 21st depending on Demand & moisture • Working as a Canal Maintenance Employee when Not ditchriding: • Assemble, load, deliver, and unload; equipment, supplies, materials, and tools to jobsites. • Load, deliver and unload materials to and from jobsites & Log what job supplies go to and turn Log in to the construction foreman. • General labor tasks such as debris removal from waterways, pipe laying, installing precast structures, organize & cleaning shop, compacting backfill, sand blasting, painting and similar type construction jobs. • Climbing in and out of canals and ditches to push pipe together and compact fill. • Lift and Carry tools and parts around job site and in shop. • Operating manual hand tools such as shovels, tampers, wrenches, etc... • Operating motor operated tools such as chain saws, whacker packer, saws, pumps, rotary hammers, etc... • Vegetation control including weed spraying, mowing, and tree removal. • Concrete work including forming, batching, pouring, finishing, and form removal for the construction of precast and cast-in-place irrigation structures and concrete repair of existing works. • Equipment maintenance such as oil changes, greasing, light welding, light mechanical work, etc.... • Operating trucks and small equipment such as skid steers, back hoe. • Installing farm gates on concrete structures • Additional responsibilities will be assigned at the company's discretion. * LYIP is willing to train Education: Ability to Learn AND a willingness to do things our way, with ability to read and write at an acceptable level. Physical Requirements: Required to have good vision, Balance, and depth perception; the ability to climb ladders, steep dirt banks, balance & walk across 11" wide Plank over Water filled ditches, climb into and out of equipment and vehicles; the ability to work in all types of weather; and the ability to lift 75 pounds. Next Page Relief Ditchrider Job Description Summary of Work: Under the supervision of the Watermaster, distribute irrigation water to farms fairly, safely control water levels in all ditches, reading gauges, record keeping and conduct maintenance of Project features including spraying herbicide, within assigned ditchrider division including weekends. Assist in construction, concrete and maintenance activities throughout the Project during the non-irrigation season and Whenever Needed. Responsibilities: Be Professional, Be a Team Player, Communicate with Water users and fellow employees. Maintain an effective and respectful working relationship with water users, employees, and the public. Receive, log, and process water orders from water users. Distribute the water apportioned by the Watermaster amongst water users within the assigned division safely. Do so in a fair and equitable manner and in compliance ith Board of Control policies. Consult with water users who violate the Board's policies concerning water distribution. Settle disputes and differences professionally and report all non-settled disputes and differences immediately to the Watermaster and the Project Manager. Submit accurate records of all diversions, deliveries, and spills on a schedule determined by the Watermaster. Regulate all water control features in a safe and responsible manner to control all water levels, conserve water, and prevent & minimize flooding & property damage. Do safety checks before going home. Execute rationing of water according to procedure established by the Manager and the Watermaster. Operate and do daily Maintenance to project pumps daily, in an efficient and effective manner to conserve the pumps, water, and energy. Perform light-duty maintenance of all Project features within the assigned ditch rider division during the irrigation season, including but not limited to debris removal, vegetation control; including tree spraying and hand spraying of small sub-laterals, repair and upkeep of small structures such as checks and turnouts. Keep a written List of all features that need more maintenance. Perform assigned laborer duties involved in construction and maintenance activities whenever required and during the non-irrigation season and : Work may include shoveling, concrete work, welding, pipe-laying, earth compacting, weed spraying, pump maintenance, or similar jobs. Must be able to pull heavy debris out of full canals with a weed rake.
