City of Sherman Lifeguard - The Splash in Sherman, Texas
Lifeguard
This is a temporary/seasonal position with the City's Parks and Recreation Department. This position will be responsible for the proper supervision of the water, deck and ancillary areas of an assigned City aquatic recreation facility to ensure the safety of patrons and co-workers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Promote and monitor water safety rules, regulations and initiatives to maintain a safe environment for pool patrons and staff members.
- Maintain constant surveillance of assigned area to safeguard swimmers from drowning and/or other accidents and injuries.
- Rescue and resuscitate drowning persons.
- Rescue and provide aid to persons affected by life threatening injuries.
- Monitor and regulate the conduct of patrons in order to prevent accidents by enforcing established water safety rules, regulations and guidelines.
- Conduct daily inventory and inspection of pool equipment.
- Assist with daily water quality testing to ensure pool water quality is within established parameters.
- Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Current and preventative lifeguarding techniques.
- Advanced swim rescue techniques, CPR and intermediate First Aid.
- Water safety rules, regulations and guidelines associated with an aquatic facility.
Ability to:
- Swim with proficiency and endurance.
- Take necessary actions to prevent accidents and effect rescues.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
- Physically perform swimming rescues, CPR and intermediate First Aid.
- Make inferences from written material of a moderately complex nature.
Experience and Education:Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
Previous experience as a Lifeguard.
Education:
Literacy equivalent to the successful completion of the Ninth Grade.
Licenses/Certifications:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification
- American Red Cross First Aid Certification
- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification.
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is highly desirable.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Incumbents assigned to this position must be physically capable and properly trained to effect swimming rescues for persons in need and render life saving aid often requiring the use of adept swimming skills, endurance and the ability to exercise sound judgement. Incumbents assigned to this position must be physically capable of climbing ladders and/or steps in order to reach assigned work areas. Incumbents assigned to this position must be physically capable of lifting, carrying and loading materials, supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 50lbs without assistance. Incumbents assigned to this position must also be physically able to bend and stoop repeatedly and continually over time when receiving materials, stocking shelves with materials, supplies and/or cleaning pool facility. Incumbents assigned to this position can expect to perform essential job duties in a variety of work environments where the incumbent can reasonably expect to be exposed to various weather conditions such as extreme heat and prolonged exposure to the sun, wind, rain, hail and lightning as well as various hazardous substances such as caustic chemical agents and compounds, dust, chemical cleaning agents and moderately loud noise levels on a routine basis.
