Actalent Mechanical Principal in Seattle, Washington

Mechanical Principal | MEP Consulting Engineering | Seattle, WA

Full-Time | Seattle HQ | Competitive Compensation

## Why This Role Is Worth Your Attention

This is a firm that has been solving complex engineering problems since 1955 — and still operates with the drive of a firm that refuses to be complacent. Headquartered in the heart of Seattle with offices across seven states and active projects on six continents, this is an organization that has built its reputation on doing the hard work others walk away from.

As a Mechanical Principal, you’re not stepping into a seat to maintain the status quo. You’re stepping in to lead a discipline, develop engineers who are hungry to grow, and drive technically excellent work across some of the most complex and meaningful project types in the Pacific Northwest and nationally.

If you’re a senior mechanical engineer who is ready to own a practice — not just support one — this is the opportunity.

## The Firm at a Glance

  • 60+ years of engineering excellence, 160+ employees, active projects on 6 continents

  • Nationally recognized for high-technology, campus-oriented, and mission-critical solutions

  • Fully integrated multidisciplinary practice: mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, security, energy, and commissioning

  • Award-winning culture recognized for leadership, communication, and people-first values

  • A firm that develops and promotes from within — its current President/CEO has spent his entire career here

## Project Types You’ll Lead

The mechanical portfolio here spans technically demanding work across multiple high-stakes sectors:

  • Healthcare & Clinical Facilities — HVAC, plumbing, and critical environment systems for hospitals, surgical suites, and medical office buildings

  • Mission-Critical & High-Tech — Precision cooling, redundant systems, and environmental controls for data centers and command facilities

  • Campus & Higher Education — Central plant design, chilled water and heating water distribution, and building-level mechanical systems across large institutional campuses

  • Cleanrooms & Lab Environments — Dedicated outside air, dehumidification, displacement ventilation, and specialty exhaust systems

  • Sustainable Design — Geothermal systems, heat recovery, VRF, radiant heating, and energy modeling for high-performance buildings

  • Commercial & Civic — Office towers, government facilities, and mixed-use developments with complex mechanical infrastructure

## What You’ll Own

As Mechanical Principal, you carry the technical and leadership authority for the mechanical discipline. This is a role with real ownership — of the work, the team, and the client relationships.

  • Define and uphold the technical direction and quality standard for the mechanical engineering group

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of mechanical engineers and designers at all levels

  • Own client relationships from first conversation through project closeout — you are the trusted advisor your clients rely on

  • Drive business development: proposals, client pursuit strategies, interviews, and long-term relationship building

  • Collaborate fully across disciplines — electrical, telecom, commissioning, security — on integrated project delivery

  • Review and approve construction documents, calculations, and specifications

  • Represent the firm at industry events and within professional engineering organizations

  • Contribute to firm-wide leadership, strategic planning, and culture

## What You Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in building mechanical systems design

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) — Washington state required or reciprocity eligible

  • Demonstrated track record leading teams and managing senior -level client relationships

  • Deep technical expertise across HVAC, plumbing, and building mechanical systems

  • Business development experience — you understand how great engineering relationships translate into long-term work

    Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare, mission-critical, laboratory, or campus environments

  • Familiarity with central plant design and campus-scale mechanical infrastructure

  • Knowledge of sustainable systems: geothermal, VRF, heat recovery, and energy modeling

  • LEED Accreditation or PMP Certification

  • Proficiency in Revit and/or AutoCAD

## The Culture

This is a firm where people stay. Engineers attend cross-disciplinary lunch-and-learns by choice. Leadership is accessible and transparent. Tenure runs long because the work is challenging, the team is genuinely invested in each other, and the firm’s direction is communicated clearly and honestly.

The firm’s guiding principle — Inspiring Leadership Through Action — shows up every day in how senior leaders mentor junior staff, how the team rallies around difficult projects, and how the firm handled a major operational challenge in a way that earned national recognition for its leadership and communication.

If you want to work somewhere that takes culture seriously — not as a marketing exercise, but as a daily practice — this is it.

## Compensation & Benefits

  • Performance-based bonuses

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
