Commercial Fiber Splicer

Zito is seeking a full-time Fiber Splicer to handle the termination, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic cables and related equipment across its network, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.

Responsibility summary:

1. Customer premise installations, including racking, cabling, bonding, and grounding. Coordinate fiber activities with other departments and the Manager of Outside Plant.
2. Perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services.
3. Perform fiber tests with OTDRs, light source and meters.
4. Terminate, splice, bonds/grounds and tests fiber optic equipment to standards.
5. Provides accurate equipment location, splicing and terminating records for the fiber database.
6. Assists the Construction and Engineering departments in accepting and turning up the fiber network.
7. Builds bays, racking, jumper ducts and other network elements needed for the installing of fiber optic equipment and patch and panels.
8. Monitor/communicate/perform corrective actions to fix problems affecting fiber/fiber related equipment.
9. Install demarcation enclosures, switches and other telecom equipment.
10. Perform all related duties/tasks as assigned or become evident; including traveling if needed.

Skills Required:

1. Familiar with standards and best practices for premise entry and electronic equipment installation.
2. Ability to differentiate color codes, read and understand manufacturer's manuals for operating and repairing of electronic equipment and components.
3. Proficient in the operation of all related fiber tools and equipment.
4. Working knowledge of design and layout for fiber terminations.
5. Possess good understanding of fiber documentation & have the ability to assist laying new fiber circuits.
6. Experience with bucket trucks and safety procedures. Understanding of the technologies and standards as they apply to the installation of fiber optic networks.
7. Possess good understanding of Direct Current and Alternating Current wiring and operation.
8. Demonstrates strong courtesy, tact, and a positive attitude, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with customers and team members.
9. Participate in an on-call rotation.

Skills Preferred:

1. 2+ years of outside plant fiber splicing and customer premise equipment installation.
2. Experience with the following equipment: fusion splicer, mechanical splicer, OTDR, power meters, traffic identifiers, digital multimeters, cleavers, strippers, buffer tube splitters, cable ring tools, hand tools, toners, rodders, ladders, bucket trucks, etc.
3. Work well under pressure and deadline environments.
4. Ability to work under minimal supervision, within broad guidelines of procedures and goals, able to apply technical expertise to a variety of situations, evaluating problems and implementing the best solutions.

Special Requirements:

1. Active and valid state driver's license along with an excellent driving record is required for this position.
2. Confident working at heights of up to 40 feet on buckets, ladders, and utility poles, with the ability to safely carry, set up, and extend ladders weighing up to 100 lbs.
3. Use the standard tools of the trade (screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, strippers, crimpers, hammers, etc.) to route cable, connect cable and install electronic equipment.
4. Maximum body weight cannot exceed industry standards in order to comply with safety limitations of equipment.
5. Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
6. Visual and aural acuity to operate a variety of standard test and measurement equipment.
7. High school diploma or equivalent and minimum one (1) year of directly related experience.
