  • Bachelor’s degree in a life science, clinical, biomedical, engineering or closely related field.

  • Experience working as a laboratory scientist, technician, and/or equivalent position.

  • Experience with scientific equipment operation, calibration, maintenance, and/or troubleshooting.

  • Experience providing training, advice and/or direction in operational best practices of complex scientific equipment to academic and/or industry clients.

  • Knowledge of chemical hygiene, lab safety best practices and enforcement of the same.

  • Strong organization, problem solving, record keeping, and communication skills.

  • Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing ( NGS ) platforms and workflows.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of QA/QC principles in molecular biology or genomics.

  • Experience with DNA and RNA isolation and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a life science, clinical, biomedical, engineering, or closely related field.

  • Experience working in demanding technical environments (e.g. cleanroom, national lab, research center, quality control/assurance lab, clinical testing facility, equipment manufacturer, core lab).

  • Experience with molecular analysis platforms (e.g. sequencing, nucleic acid analysis equipment, quantitative PCR , thermal cyclers, cell sorting, fluorescence microscopy).

  • Experience with nucleic acid NGS library preparation and sequencing.

  • Experience with soft materials/life science sample preparation and characterization.

  • Understanding and application of bioinformatics as related to molecular analysis.

  • Hands-on experience with Illumina NexSeq series platforms.

Job Description

The CRO Research Associate II will oversee daily operations of the Molecular Analysis Core lab instrumentation and associated quality control workflows. This position will serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external clients, ensure high-quality data generation, and maintain operational excellence of molecular analysis equipment, sequencing platforms and related infrastructure.

Job Duties

  • Install, operate, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex scientific research instrumentation in areas such as microscopy, spectrometry, nucleic acid analysis, cell biology, sample preparation, and associated support equipment broadly related to molecular analysis.

  • Maintain, repair, troubleshoot, and liaise with vendors and/or TxState support organizations (e.g. facilities, IT) to ensure availability of laboratory and equipment support systems such as PC-to-instrument interface, electronic control systems, deionized water, compressed dried air, chillers/heat exchangers, low temperature freezers, cloud data storage and computer networking, compressed gas delivery, and uninterruptible power supplies.

  • Prioritize workload within a dynamic team to educate and guide a broad and interdisciplinary user base.

  • Supervise, train, interview/make hiring recommendations for, and evaluate work products of student workers employed in CRO facilities.

  • Coordinate with vendors to purchase consumables, spare parts, specialty tools, service visits, and software to support assigned equipment and laboratory operations.

  • Generate clear, concise, and grammatically correct documentation related to equipment service, facility statistics, user training, safety, standard operating procedures (SOPs), emergency operating procedures (EOPs), research capabilities, and general correspondence.

  • Maintain strict safety standards by ensuring laboratories have a documented lab safety plan, chemical inventory/ SDS binder, signage, and appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Courteously interface with faculty, staff, students, and external users to facilitate the education, research, and outreach missions of Texas State University.

  • Provide oversight of facility users and policy enforcement to ensure proper operation of laboratory equipment under CRO’s stewardship.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
