Position Description

TheDepartment of Geography and Environmental Studies (https://www.geo.txst.edu/) at Texas State University invites applications for aFaculty of Instruction in Geography and Environmental Studiesat theAssistant Professorrankto beginFall 2026. We seek individuals with a demonstrated record of excellence in classroom instruction. This position will support our undergraduate curriculum needs by providing outstanding instruction in courses including Our Dynamic Earth, Global Environmental Change, Research Methods and potentially other courses based on enrollment and need. In addition to teaching at the undergraduate level, this position will also support the department’s seven undergraduate degrees and five minors by serving as Undergraduate Program Coordinator. The Undergraduate Program Coordinator position qualifies for a one-course release per semester to oversee and address curriculum issues as they arise, chair the Undergraduate Committee, assist majors and minor students with degree program and academic policy guidance beyond college-level academic advising, and attend four Saturday undergraduate recruitment opportunities throughout the academic year.

Instructional faculty appointments are reserved for individuals who make a unique contribution to Texas State University’s mission by dedicating their time and expertise to teaching, learning, and instructional activities that complement and enhance the goals of students, academic units, and the university. An Assistant Professor of Instruction is a non-tenured faculty position that is promotion eligible, has a standard workload of four courses per semester, and is expected to contribute to department service activities. Contracts are three or five years with reappointment contingent on satisfactory annual performance review, continuity of funding, and departmental need.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Geography or closely related field by the time of appointment.

  • A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.

  • Experience with student-facing problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to teach large-enrollment courses (50+).

  • Experience handling student inquiries related to academic policies and program requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and explain institutional policies clearly.

  • Experience supporting students through administrative processes.
