Position Description
Agriculture sits at the intersection of many of today’s most pressing economic and societal challenges, including food security, food quality, supply chain resilience, environmental sustainability, and resource allocation. Addressing these challenges requires graduates with training in agricultural production systems, economic decision-making, policy analysis, financial management, and data-driven problem solving.
The Department of Agricultural Sciences (https://ag.txst.edu/) at Texas State University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-line Assistant Professor of Instruction in Agribusiness / Agricultural Economics. This is a 9-month appointment with a preferred start date of Fall 2026. We seek a dynamic and student-centered educator who can contribute broadly to our agribusiness and agricultural economics curriculum. The position is open to candidates across applied economics and agribusiness, with particular interest in applicants whose expertise includes agricultural policy and/or agricultural finance.
In addition, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting instruction in quantitative and applied skill areas, including computer programming and data applications relevant to modern agricultural systems. This position is designed to strengthen the department’s capacity to deliver applied, interdisciplinary, and workforce-relevant education that prepares students for careers in agribusiness, policy, finance, and related sectors.
Teaching Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate (and potentially graduate) instruction across agribusiness and agricultural sciences. Teaching assignments will align with departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise. Primary instructional areas may include:
Agribusiness management.
Agricultural economics (introductory and applied).
Agricultural policy.
Agricultural finance, credit, and risk management.
Commodity markets and price analysis.
In addition, the candidate will be expected to contribute to applied and technical skill development, which may include:
· Computer programming (e.g., R, Python, or similar tools).
· Data analysis and visualization.
· Decision-support tools for agricultural systems.
· Applications of data science in agriculture and agribusiness.
Responsibilities also include:
Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
Supporting experiential learning opportunities (e.g., internships, applied projects).
Participating in curriculum development and program growth.
Engaging in service at the departmental, college, and university levels.
The typical teaching load is 4/4 (100%), with expectations for high-impact teaching practices and continuous instructional improvement.
Professional Engagement
As an Assistant Professor of Instruction (teaching-focused appointment), the successful candidate is expected to maintain active engagement with industry, policy, or applied research communities. This may include:
Collaboration with agribusiness firms, financial institutions, or policy organizations.
Development of applied or extension-oriented programming.
Integration of real-world data and case studies into coursework.
Contribution to workforce development and stakeholder engagement.
Opportunities for collaboration on applied or academic research projects are available and encouraged, though research is not a formal requirement of the position.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and student engagement.
Ability to teach across core agribusiness and agricultural economics topics.
Ability (or strong potential) to teach applied, data-driven, or computational coursework relevant to agribusiness.
Evidence of effective communication and mentorship skills.
Ability to contribute to the mission of the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in agricultural policy and/or agricultural finance.
Experience teaching courses in agribusiness, applied economics, or related fields.
Experience with data analysis, programming, or computational tools (e.g., Stata, R, Python, GIS , or similar).
Experience in teaching using applied or experiential learning approaches (e.g., industry projects, internships, case-based teaching).
Professional experience in agribusiness, government, finance, or related sectors.
Experience working with diverse student populations.
Interest in curriculum development and interdisciplinary teaching.
