WM Environmental Compliance Auditor in San Juan, Puerto Rico

I. Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, plan and conduct environmental compliance audits of various entities (e.g., landfills, transfer stations, collection facilities, medical waste facilities, and recycling facilities) to determine compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements, programs, and permits with a focus in Environmental. 

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Plan and conduct internal audits to determine compliance with environmental Federal and State regulations.  

  • Review facility operations and records to ensure adequacy of internal controls, compliance with procedures, consistency with established environmental laws, rules and regulations, and guidelines applicable to overall compliance for the operation.  

  • Prepare audit reports and implement administrative and technical audit procedures for audit program activities.  

  • Review and verify audit corrective actions and actions to prevent reoccurrence for all audit findings.  

  • Reviews, prepares, or maintains audit protocols relevant to federal and state operations.  

  • Provides regulatory review and develops guidance documents as needed.

  • Interact effectively with all levels of site management and operational personnel. 

  • Perform other duties which may be assigned as time or circumstances necessitate.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job. 

A. Education and Experience 

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited) in Engineering, Environmental Science, or similar area of study, or in lieu of degree, a High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four (4) years of relevant work experience.  

  • Experience: Five (5) years of previous relevant environmental compliance experience (in addition to education requirement).  

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements 

Preferred based on a focus in: 

  • Environmental - CPEA or equivalent auditing certification    

C. Other Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Required 

  • Working knowledge of the solid waste industry is preferred.

  • Knowledge of waste, air, and water regulations is preferred.

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) most of the workday;  

  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds rare;  

  • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.) rare;  

  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odor, noise, weather extremes, or similar elements rare;  

  • Travel may be required: 60% of the time;  

  • Normal setting for this job is: office setting.
