Nutanix Software Engineering Intern - (UNDERGRAD ONLY - distributed systems, Deep Learning, LLM, NLP) in San Jose, California
Hungry, Humble, Honest, with Heart.
The Opportunity Are you a proactive and innovative software engineer with a passion for automation and a desire to make a significant impact on engineering efficiency? If so, stepping into the GenRCA (root cause analysis) AI/ML intern role means tackling some of the most complex challenges in modern cloud infrastructure: building autonomous systems that can actually think, diagnose, and resolve issues at an enterprise scale. You won't just be tinkering with standard APIs; you will be challenged to architect and optimize sophisticated agentic frameworks—utilizing LangGraph, LangChain, or AutoGen—that must accurately navigate and correlate massive volumes of logs and metrics across highly distributed services. The true depth of this opportunity lies in pushing the boundaries of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and anomaly-detection models to ensure our Conversational AI reliably provides Systems Reliability Engineers with precise, actionable root-cause summaries rather than hallucinations. It is a rigorous, high-stakes environment where your work directly dictates the resilience of the Nutanix Cloud Platform, offering a rare chance to bridge the gap between experimental LLM capabilities and robust, production-grade automated troubleshooting. This is a full-time hybrid internship where you work from the San Jose, CA office.
About the Team Our GenRCA (root cause analysis) AI/ML team is at the forefront of integrating cutting-edge generative AI directly into the Nutanix Cloud Platform. As a core part of our Auto RCA initiative, this team is responsible for developing advanced AI-driven engines that automate root cause analysis for complex IT infrastructure incidents. By leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and agentic frameworks such as LangChain and AutoGen, the team builds autonomous troubleshooting tools and anomaly-detection models that instantly correlate logs and metrics across distributed services. Our primary internal customers are our Systems Reliability Engineers (SREs), and we empower them with intuitive, conversational AI interfaces that allow them to query systems, run diagnostics, and resolve issues using natural language.
Your Role
Contribute and help innovate agentic solutions.
Perform supervised fine-tuning and instruction-tuning of open-source Generative AI models such as LLaMA-3 for a variety of downstream tasks, such as question answering, reasoning, etc.
Build data/ETL pipelines for training and fine-tuning LLMs
Set up inference endpoints and machine learning operations (MLOPs) workflow for iterative model performance tuning
NLP and IR techniques, including parsing, indexing, search, and retrieval, benchmarks.
Collaborate with internal teams on data engineering and the development of custom models and optimizations.
