Your role and responsibilities
As a Visual Design Intern at IBM Research, you’ll support the design team on a range of projects that bring the future of computing into the present. You’ll be part of the IBM Research Creative Team, responsible for translating complex ideas in quantum computing, AI, and semiconductors into compelling visual experiences across digital and physical touchpoints. You’ll collaborate closely with designers, developers, marketers, and cross-functional partners while gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced, real-world design environment. Responsibilities:
Support the team on visual design projects across brand, marketing, web, social, and product surfaces
Contribute to concept development, mood boards, and visual explorations
Participate in critiques and team reviews, incorporating feedback into your work
Maintain organized design files and asset libraries
Stay curious about design trends, tools, and visual culture, and bring fresh ideas to the team
Required technical and professional expertise
Currently pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, Visual Design, Communication Design, or a related field
Strong foundation in visual design principles, including typography, layout, color, and composition
Proficiency with Figma, Illustrator, and Photoshop
Ability to translate complex ideas into clear, simple, thoughtful visual concepts
Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Preferred technical and professional experience
Nice to have:
Skills in motion, illustration, generative graphics, or 3D
Comfort working with ambiguity and early-stage concepts
