Job Information
Adecco US, Inc. Failure Analysis Engineer in San Jose, California
Position Title: Hardware Failure Analysis Engineer
Reports To: Test Manager
Shift: Day Shift
Compensation: $70,000 – $85,000 per year
Job Summary
The Hardware Failure Analysis Engineer is a member of the engineering team responsible for investigating and resolving product issues related to industry-standard server platforms. This role works closely with customers and cross-functional internal teams—including R&D, Product Engineering, and Quality Engineering—to analyze both factory and field failure symptoms.
The engineer performs in-depth hardware and circuit-level failure analysis to determine root causes down to the component level. The position supports implementation of corrective actions, drives continuous product improvement, and contributes to special capture initiatives within the server product portfolio.
Essential Functions
Conduct detailed engineering investigations of significant customer returns, field failures, and manufacturing line escalations involving hardware-related issues.
Improve customer satisfaction and product reliability through timely diagnosis and resolution of hardware failures.
Partner directly with design and manufacturing teams to identify root causes at the component level.
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering disciplines (hardware, software, mechanical, materials, and reliability engineering) to resolve complex system issues.
Support and facilitate execution of special capture programs (e.g., early field capture and selective field return initiatives).
Provide structured feedback to internal and external design and process teams based on failure analysis results.
Standardize and communicate failure analysis methodologies across global RMA and service centers to improve debug efficiency and product knowledge.
Promote best practices across worldwide operational, RMA, and service locations.
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or related field) with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated ability to debug complex hardware issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and related diagnostic tools.
Experience with electrical design tools including CAD, schematic capture, and PCB layout software.
Knowledge of hardware testing methodologies such as functional testing, boundary scan, and in-circuit testing.
Working knowledge of server technologies including multi-core processors (Intel/AMD), DDR3/DDR4 memory, NAND flash, and PCA design.
Familiarity with high-speed interfaces and protocols such as PCIe, SAS, SCSI, SATA, Fibre Channel, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NVMe, and SSD technologies preferred.
Understanding of the hardware and software development lifecycle.
Experience with hardware, firmware, and software development and validation processes.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.
Strong collaboration, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge & Skills
Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, JavaScript, Python, and SQL.
Familiarity with operating systems including Windows, CentOS, Ubuntu, Linux, and Tiny Linux.
Experience troubleshooting analog and digital circuits at both PCBA and system levels.
Highly skilled in reading and interpreting schematics, board layouts, and assembly drawings.
Ability to analyze circuit behavior and layout to identify marginal or intermittent failure causes.
Experience using functional generators, digital multimeters (DMM), oscilloscopes, and adjustable power supplies.
Familiarity with RMA processes and strong data collection/analysis capabilities.
Knowledge of PCA, system manufacturing, RMA, and service environments.
Ability to safely isolate and inject faults to narrow issues from system level to specific PCAs.
Working knowledge of Linux command-line tools; experience with IPMI tools preferred.
Ability to develop debugging algorithms and custom test tools to accelerate failure isolation.
Strong documentation and organizational skills to effectively share findings across teams.
Proven ability to coordinate with multiple engineering groups to ensure timely return of serviced RMA products.
