Citigroup Director, In‑Business Credit Industry Head – Digital, Technology & Communications in San Francisco, California
Citi’s U.S. Commercial Bank (CCB) is a strategic growth engine serving innovation‑driven companies with revenues ranging from $10MM to $3B. At the core of CCB’s credit model is Commercial Lending Management (CLM)—an in‑business credit organization that partners directly with Coverage, Product, and Independent Risk to deliver disciplined, scalable, and market‑leading lending solutions.
We are seeking a Director, In‑Business Credit Industry Head for Digital, Technology & Communications (DTC). This role reports to the North American Head of CLM and is a key member of the senior credit leadership team, with responsibility for credit strategy, underwriting standards, portfolio risk oversight, and talent leadership across one of Citi’s highest‑growth industry verticals.
The role provides material credit risk ownership, senior decision authority, and enterprise visibility, based in San Francisco or New York, Citi’s primary hubs for technology, media, and communications clients.
Role Overview
The Industry Head (Director) leads the end‑to‑end credit lifecycle for the DTC portfolio, overseeing underwriting, structuring, documentation, and ongoing portfolio management. This role manages a large, experienced team of credit officers and analysts and serves as a senior thought partner to Coverage, Syndications, Independent Risk, and Product leadership.
This is a true senior leadership role, combining strategic direction, credit approval oversight, and people leadership, with direct influence on Citi’s capital deployment, risk posture, and growth strategy within the Digital, Technology & Communications sector.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Strategy & Risk Ownership
Own approval oversight and risk management for a material credit portfolio across Digital, Technology & Communications clients
Set underwriting standards and credit risk approach aligned with Citi’s risk appetite, business strategy, and regulatory expectations
Lead underwriting, diligence, structuring, and documentation for complex commercial lending transactions
Portfolio Management & Emerging Risk
Direct pipeline pre‑screening with Relationship Management to assess credit suitability and identify key risks early
Lead quarterly and annual portfolio reviews, including rating accuracy, covenant performance, and classification
Proactively identify emerging sector risks and drive portfolio‑level mitigation strategies
Senior Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as a senior credit partner to Coverage, Syndications, Independent Risk, Treasury, and Product leadership
Represent the DTC portfolio in senior credit committees, governance forums, and selected client discussions
Provide industry thought leadership and credit perspectives to internal and external stakeholders
People Leadership & Capability Development
Lead, develop, and retain a high‑performing, diverse team of senior credit professionals
Build strong succession pipelines and mentor next‑generation credit leaders
Champion continuous improvement of industry‑specific credit expertise across CCB
Governance, Controls & Strategic Initiatives
Ensure strong governance, controls, and regulatory compliance across the portfolio (First Line of Defense accountability)
Sponsor and lead North American and global CLM initiatives, including policy evolution and process transformation
Drive training and capability‑building efforts to strengthen credit excellence across the organization
Qualifications & Experience
15+ years of experience in senior credit decision‑making roles within a large financial institution
Extensive experience underwriting and managing complex commercial credit transactions
Deep knowledge of the Digital, Technology & Communications ecosystem , including sector‑specific risks and performance drivers
Proven leadership experience managing and developing large credit teams
Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment with significant approval authority
Prior Senior Credit Officer / Director‑level authority preferred
Experience across a wide range of wholesale lending products (working capital, term loans, M&A, treasury, derivatives)
Advanced degree (MBA) or formal executive credit training preferred
