Engineering Intern (San Diego, CA)
Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) is a private technology company that designs, develops and operates space camera systems for government and commercial aerospace customers and provides services in spacecraft instrument operations and space science research. We are offering a unique Engineering Internship position that provides a college student an opportunity to work within our Micro Mission Systems (MMS) group. The Intern will engage with a small multidisciplinary team and will focus on ground support equipment production and testing fault protection software features and general integration and testing support. The Intern will be mentored by professionals, gaining hands-on experience and technical growth. Opportunity

Essential Functions
Prepares mechanical ground support equipment for testing which may involve designing, constructing and testing small fixtures.
Assists during test preparation, including within the cleanroom.
Assembles and cleans non-flight hardware.
Orders various supplies and small piece parts and tools.
Executes written test plan to test the various spacecraft fault protection scripts.
Sends commands in our mission operations ground environment (GDS).
Works with other engineers to determine how to inject faults into the simulation software (ODYSSY) running on our spacecraft engineering model flight computer.
Follows test procedure to ensure faults are correctly detected and corrected.
Identifies and documents any bugs, errors or issues that are encountered, keeping a log of test activities, writes a final test report, and enters software bugs in Git, our bug tracking software.
Prepares for testing by gathering required materials, tools and equipment and configuring Raspberry Pi software as needed per test setup instructions.
Configures test equipment and hookup EGSE and MGSE as directed by the Test Conductor.
Supports test conduction as needed per direction from the Test Conductor.
Breaks down test equipment and returns tools and materials to their correct storage locations after testing.
Gathers test data after testing, collates, processes, and graphs test results as directed by the Test Conductor or Cognizant Engineer.
Prior to entering the cleanroom unescorted, receive training in the fundamentals of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).

Program Details
8-12 weeks program
Full-time (8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday)
Hourly, Non-exempt, temporary position

Minimum Qualifications
Current enrollment in Engineering program in a 4-year institution majoring in either engineering, science or mathematics.
Basic Mac and PC literacy required.
Familiarity with Linux environments.
Familiarity with mechanical or software testing.
Solid experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.
Basic math and strong written and oral communication skills required.
Must be detail oriented and dependable with strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience in manufacturing.
Knowledge of mechanical assembly and fabrication.
Experience with CAD drawing.
Familiarity with Python and G Suite.
Physical Requirements Must be able to comprehend and communicate complex technical and engineering concepts. Must be able to remain in a stationary position while operating a computer for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work and move around in a cleanroom environment, wearing required outer garments including smock/coveralls, shoe covers, mask, hood and gloves. Ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs. as needed. Ability to work with hand tools and limited power tools (drills). Moves in and around a lab space. Ability to handle high stress levels in connection with multiple conflicting priorities and deadlines. High tolerance for ambiguity and shifting expectations. Strong analytical and organizational skills with ability to prioritize workload.
