SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SUBSTITUTE PARAEDUCATOR in San Bernardino, California

POSITION SUMMARY Under the direction of a classroom teacher, the Substitute Paraeducator supports the preparation and implementation of educational and training programs for students in Alternative Education and Special Education settings. This position assists with instructional activities, student supervision, care needs, and the maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment.

PROGRAM ASSIGNMENTS Alternative Education Programs: Assists teachers in supporting at-risk youth in Community Schools (grades 3-12) and Juvenile Court Schools. Supports academic instruction, social skills development, mental health growth, CTE learning, and maintenance of classroom safety.

Special Education Programs: Assists teachers in serving students with exceptional needs from birth to age 22. Supports academic and functional skills development for students with disabilities such as autism, intellectual disabilities, visual/hearing impairments, emotional disturbance, orthopedic impairments, multiple disabilities, and traumatic brain injury.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assist in academic, CTE, social-skills, health, parenting, motor-skills, and life-skills instruction. Support student care needs, including toileting, diapering, hygiene assistance, feeding, and clothing management. Prepare classroom materials and resources. Supervise students effectively and maintain a safe environment. Assist with classroom activities and record-keeping. Communicate cooperatively and professionallywhile maintaining confidentialitywith parents, school staff, law enforcement, and service agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Must meet ESSA requirements (one of the following): - Associate degree or higher, OR - 72 quarter units or 48 semester units, OR - Passage of the ESSA written exam (proof required). High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to communicate clearly in English, verbally and in writing. Basic arithmetic skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Standing, walking, bending, lifting, and working at child level. Kneeling, crouching, stooping, and reaching in various directions. Ability to push students in wheelchairs and navigate stairs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience in classrooms serving students with exceptional needs or in youth/at-risk programs. Training in child development, health care, or special education. Experience with computer applications.
