Job Summary
This position is responsible for providing both primary and specialty medical services. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
Performs physical examinations.
Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.
Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
Reaches tentative diagnosis of medical, surgical and other conditions.
Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.
Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.
Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
Participates in special projects and committee functions.

Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:
- Certification in ACLS / BLS / NRP / ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Preferences
Direct Patient Care : Perform palliative care consults in the hospital and outpatient settings; coordinate palliative care services for these patients and families. Perform routine scheduled, urgent, and emergent medical evaluations, order laboratory and diagnostic studies, prescribe medications and treatments, coordinate medical consultations, and participate in discharge planning for inpatients that have multiple active medical conditions and significant disease burden, in collaboration with the faculty attending physician. The APC works cooperatively with the medical students, physician residents, nursing students, nurse practitioner students and fellows. The APC follows patients as they are transferred throughout the hospital providing continuity of care to patients, families and medical teams.
Teaching Duties : Assist with development and presentation of palliative care educational programs to house staff, faculty, nursing and other hospital staff. Collaborates with clinical departments and clinical support services, such as nursing, in the development of educational programs. Serve as clinical preceptor for APRN /PA students who are enrolled in degree programs at approved universities/colleges.
Documentation of Medical Services : Complete the written documentation of medical services required by regulatory agencies including the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Facilities, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the third party insurers identified by the patients. Direct completion of POLST forms for appropriate patients.
