Job Title: Formulation ChemistJob Description

The Formulation Chemist leads the development and commercialization of innovative dietary supplement products, with a focus on gummies, capsules, softgels, and related delivery systems. This role designs robust formulations, supports scale-up to manufacturing, prepares technical documentation, and provides ongoing production support. The chemist collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to ensure products meet quality, safety, regulatory, and performance standards in a fast-growing nutraceutical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead product development and commercialization activities for dietary supplements, including quotations, product and process development, commercialization, and ongoing production support.

  • Develop robust formulations for various dosage forms such as gummies, capsules, softgels, and other delivery systems that meet performance, stability, and quality requirements.

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including quotations, master batch records, verification protocols, and vendor documentation.

  • Source and qualify raw materials in collaboration with internal stakeholders, ensuring they meet functional, quality, and regulatory requirements.

  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and established processes throughout formulation, testing, and documentation activities.

  • Maintain a safe and organized laboratory and production support environment, adhering to safety guidelines and best practices.

  • Conduct bench-scale formulation work and design experiments to optimize gummy and other dosage form formulations.

  • Plan and execute pilot-scale trials and support the scale-up of formulations to full manufacturing, troubleshooting issues as they arise.

  • Apply strong working knowledge of gelling systems and sweeteners to achieve desired texture, stability, and sensory attributes in gummy products.

  • Work with active ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, botanicals, cannabinoids, and other functional compounds, ensuring proper incorporation and stability in formulations.

  • Evaluate ingredient functionality, stability, and interactions within gummy matrices and other delivery systems to improve product performance and shelf life.

  • Conduct shelf-life, texture, and stability testing, analyze results, and recommend formulation or process adjustments based on findings.

  • Ensure formulations and processes align with GMPs, food safety standards, and quality documentation requirements.

  • Document formulation work, experimental results, and process changes clearly and accurately to support reproducibility and regulatory compliance.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, quality, R&D, development, and other internal teams to support successful product launches and ongoing production.

  • Support project timelines and deliverables by effectively managing multiple development projects and priorities in a growing environment.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related scientific discipline.

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in formulating gummies or similar confectionery, nutraceutical, or delivery systems.

  • Strong working knowledge of gelling systems such as gelatin, starch, and agar, and their application in gummy formulations.

  • Strong working knowledge of sweeteners and their impact on texture, stability, and sensory properties.

  • Experience working with active ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, botanicals, cannabinoids, or other functional compounds.

  • Understanding of ingredient functionality, stability, and interactions in gummy matrices and other related delivery systems.

  • Ability to perform bench-scale formulation work, conduct pilot-scale trials, and support scale-up to manufacturing.

  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food safety standards, and quality documentation requirements.

  • Experience conducting shelf-life, texture, and stability testing for formulated products.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve formulation and process-related issues.

  • Solid documentation skills with the ability to record experimental work, results, and changes in a clear and organized manner.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including operations, quality, R&D, and development.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related scientific field is preferred.

  • Experience formulating sugar-free, reduced-sugar, vegan, or health-functional gummies.

  • Knowledge of flavor systems, color stabilization, masking techniques, and sensory evaluation methods.

  • Experience in dietary supplements, functional food, or pharmaceutical product development and manufacturing environments.

  • Experience working with regulatory frameworks such as FDA, cGMP, dietary supplement regulations, or food regulations.

  • Experience supporting or working with contract manufacturers on formulation transfer, scale-up, and production troubleshooting.

  • Project management experience, including managing timelines, priorities, and deliverables across multiple development projects.

Work Environment

This is a fully onsite role with a typical schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will work in a laboratory and production-support environment within a growing nutraceutical manufacturer that is expanding its team and project pipeline. The setting emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional teams and adherence to GMP, food safety, and quality standards. The broader organization includes a parent company based outside the United States, providing exposure to an international business environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Rowland Heights, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $115000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
