Aerotek Lathe Machinist in Roseville, Minnesota

Job Title: CNC Lathe Machinist

Job Description

This role focuses on setting up and operating a Doosan Puma 2100SY II twin‑spindle CNC lathe with live tooling and Fanuc controls in a custom, in‑house manufacturing environment. You will produce small‑volume, repeatable, engineered parts from various metals, maintain tight tolerances, and gradually take on CNC programming responsibilities using Mastercam.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate a Doosan Puma 2100SY II CNC lathe with twin spindles and live tooling.

  • Run small‑volume production batches, typically ranging from 5 to 20 parts per run.

  • Machine parts from stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and nickel alloys while maintaining process consistency.

  • Hold and verify tight tolerances to ±0.002" using appropriate inspection tools such as calipers and micrometers.

  • Inspect parts throughout production, make necessary tool and work offsets, and adjust processes to maintain quality.

  • Apply strong understanding of machining fundamentals, tooling, and fixturing to optimize setups and cycle times.

  • Troubleshoot machining issues, including tooling wear, chatter, dimensional variation, and surface finish problems.

  • Learn and use Mastercam to create, modify, and optimize CNC programs for the Doosan Puma 2100SY II.

  • Build approximately 3–5 CNC programs per week once fully trained and prepared.

  • Edit and refine G-code at the machine as needed to improve part quality and process reliability.

  • Collaborate with team members to support repeatable, engineered production rather than one‑off job‑shop work.

  • Follow established procedures and contribute ideas for process control and continuous improvement.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in line with the shop’s high standards of cleanliness and organization.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience setting up and running CNC lathes, preferably with live tooling and twin spindles.

  • Working knowledge of Fanuc CNC controls, including operation and basic program navigation.

  • Strong understanding of machining fundamentals, including speeds and feeds, tool selection, and workholding/fixturing.

  • Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers to verify tight tolerances (±0.002").

  • Ability to work comfortably with tight tolerances and quality-critical components.

  • Solid troubleshooting skills for resolving machining, tooling, and dimensional issues.

  • High attention to detail and a methodical approach to setup, inspection, and documentation.

  • Willingness and ability to learn Mastercam or similar CAM software for programming and program modification.

  • Familiarity with G-code concepts and basic CNC program editing at the machine.

  • Comfort working in a machine shop environment with CNC lathes, multiple axes, and live tooling.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience operating or setting up Doosan Puma CNC lathes.

  • Experience with twin-spindle and live-tooling lathe setups and machining.

  • Background in small‑batch, engineered product, or custom manufacturing environments rather than high-volume job shops.

  • Experience programming or editing CNC code, including G-code, beyond basic offset changes.

  • Hands-on experience with Mastercam or other CAM systems for toolpath creation and post-processing.

  • Familiarity with process control and continuous improvement practices in a machine shop.

  • Comfort working with a variety of materials, including stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and nickel alloys.

Why Work Here?

You will join a highly supportive, quality-focused organization that invests heavily in its people and their long-term financial well-being. The benefits package includes a generous 401(k) program where a 3% contribution earns a 6% match, plus an additional 5–7% of income invested annually through profit sharing. Comprehensive medical coverage is available through a major carrier with access to a broad statewide network. Paid time off is negotiated at hire and adjusted over time to reflect your experience and contributions. The culture emphasizes collaboration, mutual respect between floor staff and leadership, and a balanced approach where doing the job correctly is valued more than rushing through production.

Work Environment

The role is based in a custom, in‑house manufacturing facility that focuses on repeatable, engineered parts rather than walk‑in job‑shop work. The shop is extremely clean, organized, and notably quiet for a machine shop environment. Quality and accuracy take priority over sheer output, so you are not pressured to produce a high volume of parts at the expense of doing the job right. The team emphasizes process control, continuous improvement, and open communication, with floor-level employees and managers aligned on goals and expectations. You will work with modern CNC equipment, including a Doosan Puma 2100SY II with twin spindles and live tooling, controlled by Fanuc, and will use tools such as calipers, micrometers, and CAM software like Mastercam in your day-to-day work.
