City of Fraser Part-Time Probation Screener in Roseville, Michigan

General Summary

 

Under the supervision of the Director of Probation, the role of the Probation Screener is to conduct screenings and assessments to determine whether a person will benefit from rehabilitative services, including alcohol or drug education/treatment programs. Before the sentencing date of a probationer, the probation screener recommends to the sentencing judge a course of action to be followed. Probation screeners do not perform clinical diagnosis or develop treatment plans.

 

Essential Functions

 

  1. Perform Screenings weekly. Amount varies per week, average of 6.

     

  2. Screenings will be conducted on the phone with defendants in the community or on zoom with prisoners at the Macomb County Jail. Remote work is permitted.

     

  3. Obtaining LEIN and SOS record of defendant. Interpret and report on assessment defendant's criminal and driving history.

     

  4. Obtain police reports from agencies for investigation purposes. Contact other courts/police departments for further investigation.

     

  5. Score and interpret alcohol/drug assessment results.

     

  6. Submit written reports to judges and defense attorneys prior to sentencing.

     

  7. Obtain and maintain up to date LEIN certification.

     

  8. Knowledge of community resources.

Physical Requirements

 

Ability to access departmental files.

Ability to enter and retrieve information from computer.

Ability to generate various documentation from computer system.

 

Working Conditions

 

Work remotely with one day to court to obtain files.

Regular exposure to defendants in various emotional states who may be verbally abusive or hostile.

 

Education and Experience

 

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, social work or a field related to the work preferred.

 

Candidates must have excellent writing skills. Prior criminal justice system and assessment experience preferred. An understanding of substance use disorder and/or mental illness is also preferred.

 

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

 

  • Michigan Drivers License.
  • LEIN certification.
