Actalent Quality Control Chemist in ROCKY MOUNT, North Carolina

Job Title: Quality Control Chemist IJob Description

The Quality Control Chemist I performs routine analytical and wet chemistry testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished pharmaceutical products to ensure they meet stringent quality standards. This role supports a cGMP-regulated quality control laboratory, reporting test results accurately through computerized systems or standard paper-based documentation. It offers extensive training and development in wet chemistry techniques and the opportunity to grow into advanced analytical methods such as HPLC, making it an excellent role for a recent chemistry graduate interested in a career as a pharmaceutical chemist.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic wet chemistry and analytical testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to verify compliance with quality specifications.

  • Conduct non-instrumental wet chemistry techniques, including manual titrations, pH measurements, conductivity testing, autotitrations, UV-Vis analysis, and use of a polarimeter.

  • Report testing results accurately and promptly using computerized laboratory systems or standard paper-based documentation, following established procedures.

  • Consistently adhere to site, company, and laboratory safety rules, and immediately raise any safety concerns or issues to supervision when identified.

  • Follow cGMP and cGDP procedures at all times to ensure data integrity, regulatory compliance, and high-quality laboratory practices.

  • Follow supervisor directions while maintaining the ability to function independently and seek clarification by asking questions when needed.

  • Adapt to dynamic work sequences and changing priorities to support laboratory and production schedules.

  • Actively participate in daily and weekly planning discussions with teammates and supervision, offering suggestions to improve Right First Time performance and schedule adherence.

  • Communicate work sequence status to the supervisor in a timely and transparent manner, especially when work cannot be completed as planned.

  • Participate in discussions to identify root causes and opportunities for correction and improvement when scheduled work is not achieved.

  • Demonstrate engagement in achieving QC laboratory, team, and individual performance goals.

  • Proactively offer suggestions for process and workflow improvements when encountering roadblocks or issues.

  • Support and assist teammates on the same shift, contributing to a positive, collaborative, and solutions-focused laboratory environment.

  • Complete required training in wet testing and good documentation practices (GDP) and obtain necessary sign-offs before testing live product.

  • Work primarily within the in-process testing group, ensuring accurate and timely analysis to support manufacturing operations.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry is required; other degrees such as biology or microbiology are considered only with recent, relevant chemistry experience.

  • Laboratory experience gained through academic coursework, research, or internship in a chemistry setting.

  • Foundational understanding of wet chemistry techniques, including pH measurement, titration, and general solution preparation.

  • Ability to perform manual titrations accurately and consistently.

  • Basic knowledge of pH measurement and its application in analytical testing.

  • Attention to detail and strong commitment to accurate data recording and documentation.

  • Interest in building a long-term career as a pharmaceutical chemist.

  • Ability to follow cGMP and cGDP practices and adhere strictly to written procedures and protocols.

  • Willingness and ability to work 3rd shift on a consistent basis.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Exposure to or familiarity with HPLC is beneficial; the role offers the opportunity to be trained on HPLC based on performance with wet chemistry techniques.

  • Experience with UV-Vis analysis, conductivity measurements, autotitrations, and use of a polarimeter is an advantage.

  • Strong communication skills to provide clear status updates and participate effectively in team planning discussions.

  • Collaborative mindset with a positive attitude toward supporting teammates and contributing to a constructive laboratory culture.

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and dynamic work sequences in a fast-paced QC environment.

  • Motivation to learn cGMP principles and leverage them as a strong foundation for career growth in the pharmaceutical industry.

Work Environment

This position is based in a Quality Control Chemistry laboratory within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The chemist primarily works in the in-process testing group, initially training directly with the first-shift team for approximately 1–2 months before testing live product. During this training period, the individual learns wet chemistry techniques and good documentation practices and must obtain sign-off before independently testing live product. After training, the role transitions to a 3rd shift schedule with core hours from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., with flexibility to shift the schedule by plus or minus two hours based on business needs. Several shift pattern options are available, including four 10-hour nights (Tuesday–Friday or Sunday–Wednesday), an 8-hour Sunday–Thursday night schedule, or a standard Monday–Friday 8-hour night schedule, with no Saturday night coverage and no weekend rotation. The laboratory operates under cGMP and cGDP standards, using a range of wet chemistry and analytical equipment such as pH meters, titration apparatus, UV-Vis instruments, and polarimeters, with the potential to train on HPLC systems. The dress code is business casual, with closed-toe, flat, comfortable shoes required for safety. The role includes access to health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, six paid holidays, and accrued paid time off, as well as access to an employee discount and perks program, creating a supportive and development-focused work environment for early-career chemists.
