Job Description:
Biomedical research activities for a major federal health agency depend on the technologies and services you’ll support as a Scientific Computing Program Manager at GDIT.
In direct support of a major federal biomedical research agency, you will utilize your contract, program, and project management expertise, HPC systems knowledge, scientific instrumentation understanding, and stakeholder‑engagement skills to deliver high‑impact solutions.
This position requires working at the customer location in Rockville, MD 2-3 days a week and meeting as needed with federal customers and researchers in Rockville and Bethesda, MD.
Responsibilities:
Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of professionals supporting scientific computing, HPC engineering, data acquisition, and scientific instrumentation. This includes setting priorities, assigning work, coaching staff, and ensuring alignment with federal customer objectives.
Oversee all aspects of contract execution for a major federal biomedical research agency, including workforce planning, hiring, onboarding, employee performance management, and retention strategy.
Ensure high quality delivery of contractual requirements by managing deliverables, developing detailed project plans, tracking risks, and maintaining compliance with government standards.
Act as a primary interface with federal leadership. Provide regular status briefings, financial updates, performance reports, and risk assessments to ensure transparency and alignment with agency priorities.
Manage the contract’s financial health, including monitoring labor budgets, forecasting, burn rate analysis, and ensuring profitability and compliance with federal acquisition regulations.
Drive operational excellence across the HPC and scientific computing environment by coordinating team activities, resolving escalated issues, and ensuring research programs receive timely, reliable computing support.
Champion continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance infrastructure performance, optimize instrumentation workflows, and strengthen customer satisfaction.
Guide modernization efforts, expand HPC capabilities, and shape future scientific computing strategies while growing leadership and technical skills.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:
Required Skills and Experience:
Masters in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field
10+ years of experience with scientific computing or research‑support programs
5+ years managing teams of 10+ staff
Experience with HPC systems, scientific computing applications, instrumentation/data acquisition workflows, cloud and storage technologies
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust
Desired Skills and Experience:
PhD preferred
Experience with Python/R/MATLAB preferred
Strong communication
Federal contract management experience
Experience with performance management and financial oversight
PMP Certification

The likely salary range for this position is $164,382 - $218,500. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
