Actalent Field Service Engineer in Rockford, Michigan

Job Title: Field Service EngineerJob Description

The Field Service Engineer supports the installation, startup, and commissioning of automated systems at customer facilities. This role focuses on programming and troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, drives, servos, and robotics, while ensuring that electrical and controls systems operate safely, efficiently, and in line with customer requirements. The position works closely with both electrical and mechanical teams to deliver reliable, well-integrated automation solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation, startup, and commissioning of new automation systems at customer sites.

  • Program, edit, and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic, HMIs, VFDs, drives, and servos to support system performance and reliability.

  • Perform full I/O checks and system verification to confirm proper operation of automated equipment.

  • Troubleshoot controls systems and electrical equipment onsite, diagnosing and resolving issues efficiently.

  • Create and implement programming changes to support equipment upgrades, retrofits, and process improvements.

  • Establish and verify communication between machines using Ethernet and hardwired signals.

  • Collaborate closely with mechanical and electrical installation teams to ensure seamless system integration.

  • Wire machine controls and industrial control panels in accordance with applicable standards.

  • Read, interpret, and redline electrical schematics to support installation, modifications, and troubleshooting.

  • Apply working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) when working on electrical systems.

  • Troubleshoot basic line control, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems as needed.

  • Follow all customer plant, safety, and electrical regulations while working onsite.

  • Travel to customer locations, primarily within the United States, to support field service activities and commissioning projects.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of field service or controls engineering experience.

  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, drives, and servos.

  • Ability to program, edit, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, drives, and servos.

  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Ability to wire machine controls and industrial control panels.

  • Ability to read and redline electrical schematics accurately.

  • Experience using electrical tools and diagnostic equipment in industrial environments.

  • Experience troubleshooting pneumatics and/or hydraulics.

  • Basic understanding of line control, electrical, and mechanical systems.

  • Ability to work safely in high and low voltage industrial environments.

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods while performing field service work.

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience or formal training with Fanuc or KUKA robotics is preferred.

  • Knowledge of palletizing and automated material handling concepts is preferred.

  • Experience with materials handling and palletizing systems is beneficial.

  • Strong troubleshooting mindset and ability to work independently in the field.

  • Comfort working collaboratively with cross-functional mechanical and electrical teams.

  • Openness to ongoing technical training and skills development.

Work Environment

This role involves working in a variety of industrial environments while traveling to customer sites, with all travel kept within the United States and typical trips limited to no more than 10 days at a time. The company provides per diem and covers travel-related expenses. The headquarters facility is modern and up to date, with large windows throughout the offices, collaborative workstations, and a recently built addition that supports a team-oriented culture. The shop floor is very clean, well organized, and temperature controlled, with large doors that can be opened to bring in fresh air when conditions allow. The environment emphasizes flexibility and respect for work–life balance, with a culture that supports family needs and flexible arrival and departure times. Team members work under leadership that actively implements positive changes and supports access to high-level training, including opportunities for contractors to attend training programs. You will regularly work with industrial automation equipment, electrical tools, diagnostic instruments, and robotics systems in both the field and the headquarters facility.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockford, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
