The Department of History at the University of Rochester invites applications for a visiting assistant professor whose research and teaching is focused on European history in the modern period, broadly defined. The term of appointment is two years, with a beginning date of July 1, 2026. A strong internal candidate has been identified, but all applications received no later than March 17, 2026, will be considered.

We invite applications from across the spectrum of traditional history and interdisciplinary history units, to include comparative history, global history, and international history. We will consider social scientific or humanistic inquiry, qualitative or quantitative work, and region-specific or comparative/international approaches. Due to teaching needs, we are especially interested in scholars who can teach an entry-level course in early modern European history in addition to the specializations in the modern period.

Applications are especially welcome from scholars who will complement and/or expand the research portfolios of current researchers in the UR Department of History. Current strengths in UR Department of History include the study of the colonial Atlantic; the history of Bermuda; the history of Mexico and Brazil; medieval history; and modern US history. Growth areas in the department include the relationship between race, gender, and public health; Native American history; the history of early modern Europe; and the history of Latin America.

The position includes relocation expenses of $3,000 and an annual research and professional development budget of $2,000.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in history or a related field (ABD candidates should have the PhD in hand by June 30, 2026).
