Description of Duties
This is a senior level position responsible for the participation in, and oversight of the inspection and testing of commercial weighing and measuring devices. Work is performed in accordance with applicable New York State and Local laws, rules, regulations and ordinances. Employees are required to work outdoors in inclement weather and must be capable of lifting/moving items weighing up to and including fifty (50) pounds. The employer reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Weights and Measures Administrator or other higher level staff member. Either general supervision is exercised over, or lead supervision is provided to a staff of Inspectors of Weights and Measures. Does related work as required.
HELP PROGRAM : Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Program. This program streamlines the appointment process to allow Monroe County to hire diverse, qualified permanent employees quickly and without examinations.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
(A) Successful completion of twenty-four (24) college semester credit hours in the physical sciences, engineering sciences, electronic sciences, mechanical technology and/or mathematics, plus one (1) year paid full-time field investigation experience requiring the evaluation of information and/or evidence to determine and make recommendations in regard to legal compliance; OR,
(B) Two (2) years paid full-time experience inspecting and testing devices and packaged commodities,
enforcing weights and measures laws and regulations.*Physical sciences include chemistry (inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry), earth science (meteorology, astronomy, geology) and physics.
**Electronic sciences do not include course work in electricity; electricity is a science that deals with the laws of electricity, while electronics is a branch of physics that deals with the emission, behavior, and effects of electrons (in tubes and transistors) with electronic devices.
*Mathematics includes course work in accounting, economics, etc. provided the primary focus of the course is manipulation of numbers.
NOTES : Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications under (A) above must submit, at the time of application, an official or student copy of a college transcript or an itemized list of course work and credits received.
Verifiable part-time experience may be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements: 8-15 hours per week is ¼ time; 16-23 hours per week is ½ time; 24-31 hours per week is ¾ time; 32+ hours per week is full time.
Experience in (B) can be substituted for experience in (A) on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : If you are appointed you will be required to possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) license issued by the State of New York or otherwise demonstrate your capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
