General Description

This is a skilled mechanic position involving responsibility for completing repairs and preventive maintenance to heavy-duty trucks and equipment. Employees of this class, because of the type of equipment and the nature of City operations, will be expected, when needed, to work under unpleasant conditions such as extreme heat and cold and shall adhere to all safety regulations. Employees of this class work independently or as a team member with limited supervision for non-routine, difficult or costly repairs. Employees of this class will be required to work variable hours, overtime, and be on-call depending on seasonal demands. Related work is performed as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Repairs air and hydraulic brake systems on trucks, sweepers, backhoes, front-end loaders, and other heavy and light off-road motor equipment;

  • Repairs diesel and gas engines on heavy duty trucks and off-road equipment;

  • Replaces or repairs tires, as needed;

  • Repairs steering assemblies, cooling systems and hydraulic systems on heavy-duty trucks and equipment;

  • Performs preventive maintenance on medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment;

  • Performs New York State authorized inspections of medium and heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment;

  • Removes and replaces automatic transmissions on medium and heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment;

  • Repairs gasoline engines in various types of equipment;

  • Repairs snow plows, plow frames, plow hitch assemblies, and snow blowers;

  • Performs minor welding as needed, including electric arc welding;

  • Performs preventive maintenance functions such as, but not limited to, lubrication, major and minor tune-up of diesel and gasoline engines, and performs safety inspections;

  • Diagnoses problems caused by maladjustments, worn, damaged, or defective parts, or improper lubrication of heavy-duty vehicles;

  • Checks for heavy-duty truck problems by using visual observations, listening for audible problem signals, road testing vehicle, shop testing equipment, and other routine trouble-shooting methods;

  • Uses an oxygen/acetylene torch to do cutting and brazing;

  • Completes repair orders, to include comments and labor and other repair information;

  • Assists in training and development of lower-level repair personnel;

  • Diagnose and performs repairs to electric systems on on-road and off-road equipment;

  • Operates tow truck, on a voluntary basis and with appropriate licensure, where the combined weight tow truck and towed apparatus can exceed 26,000 pounds;

  • May act as team leader for a small group of mechanics;

  • May act as Mechanic Supervisor in his/her absence;

  • Knowledge of the principles of heavy-duty repairs, systems and parts interrelationships, systems and part functions;

  • Knowledge of the up-to-date methods and practices involves in repair to heavy-duty vehicles, including engine electronic controls.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or Equivalent PLUS:

1.) Three (3) years of full-time, paid experience as a heavy equipment mechanic performing repairs to heavy- and medium-duty motor equipment (This includes vehicles with a minimum GVWR of 18,000 lbs. or more and contain systems or components such as diesel engines, air brakes, hydraulic equipment or other major components found on medium and heavy duty vehicles).

OR

2.) Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Automotive or Diesel Mechanics or closely related field AND two (2) years of full-time paid experience as described in (1) above.

OR

3.) Twenty-four (24) months experience working as a Heavy Mechanic II for the City of Rochester.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Possession of a New York State Class D driver’s license at time of appointment. Possession of a New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License, without air brake restriction, within ninety (90) days after the time of appointment. This licensure must be maintained throughout employment in this job.

    AND
  2. Possession of a valid New York State Inspector’s Light and Heavy Equipment License within ninety (90) days after the time of appointment;

    AND
  3. Must own proper selection of tools necessary to make repairs to heavy-duty vehicles at the time of appointment, i.e., 1/4 to 1/2 inch standard and metric socket sets up to 1 1/2 inches/33mm, open-end wrenches up to 2 inches, metric tools, air impact tools 3/8-, 1/2- and 3/4-inch drives, tool box, etc.
