Job Title: Commercial / Industrial HVAC Service Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on performing service, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance on large commercial and industrial HVAC systems. You will work independently in the field across a variety of facilities, diagnosing complex mechanical and electrical issues, recommending repair or replacement solutions, and ensuring systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Responsibilities

  • Perform service, repair, and preventative maintenance on large commercial and industrial HVAC units, including packaged units and rooftop units.

  • Service and repair HVAC/R equipment such as electrical systems, refrigeration components, gas and oil systems, VAV and mixing boxes, fan boxes, controls, VRF systems, VFDs, CRAC units, DX systems, water source heat pumps, boilers, and related hydronic equipment.

  • Travel to commercial facilities throughout the Richmond, VA area, including hospitals, office buildings, distribution centers, and other large sites, to perform scheduled and emergency service.

  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints to accurately diagnose and resolve system issues.

  • Use advanced troubleshooting techniques to identify mechanical, electrical, and control problems and determine appropriate repair or replacement actions.

  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance to maximize equipment performance, extend system life, and reduce downtime.

  • Apply knowledge of basic sheet metal practices when working on ductwork and related components.

  • Utilize air balancing principles and techniques to ensure proper system airflow and comfort levels.

  • Document all work performed, including diagnostics, repairs, parts used, and recommendations, in a clear and timely manner.

  • Communicate effectively with customers to explain findings, discuss options, and provide professional recommendations.

  • Demonstrate strong customer service by responding promptly, maintaining a professional appearance, and building long-term client relationships.

  • Work both independently and as part of a team, taking responsibility for assigned tasks and assisting colleagues as needed.

  • Demonstrate willingness to accept responsibility and step into leadership roles when required on projects or service calls.

  • Operate company vehicles safely and maintain a clean driving record while traveling between job sites.

  • Comply with all safety procedures, industry standards, and company policies while working on active job sites.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of commercial and industrial HVAC service experience.

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Commercial/Industrial Service Technician working on large HVAC/R systems.

  • Strong mechanical & hands-on experience in HVAC service and maintenance.

  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.

  • Familiarity with a wide range of HVAC equipment and advanced troubleshooting techniques.

  • Proven experience making informed repair versus replacement decisions on HVAC/R systems.

  • Knowledge of basic sheet metal practices related to HVAC systems.

  • Knowledge of air balancing principles and techniques.

  • Service and repair experience with HVAC/R equipment including electrical, refrigeration, gas, oil, VAV/mixing boxes, fan boxes, controls, VRF, VFD, CRAC, DX, water source heat pumps, boilers, and hydronic equipment.

  • EPA/CFC Certification (Universal or Type II).

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean and insurable driving record.

  • Ability to work independently in the field and also collaborate effectively as a team member.

  • Advanced customer service skills with a professional demeanor.

  • Strong communication and documentation skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to pass required screening and drug screening processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Formal HVAC education or technical training is preferred.

  • Experience servicing large commercial facilities such as hospitals, office buildings, and distribution centers.

  • Comfort working with a variety of control systems and variable speed technologies.

  • Demonstrated willingness to take on responsibility and informal leadership roles in the field.

  • High level of organization and attention to detail when documenting service activities and maintenance records.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role serving commercial and industrial facilities throughout the Richmond, VA area. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, generally from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some variation based on project needs, which may shift hours as early as 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A 40+ hour workweek is common, reflecting steady demand and consistent workload. You will work at a variety of sites, including hospitals, office buildings, large distribution centers, and other commercial properties, servicing rooftop units, packaged units, and a wide range of HVAC/R systems and controls. The environment involves traveling between job locations, working both indoors and outdoors, and operating standard HVAC tools, diagnostic equipment, and service vehicles while adhering to safety procedures and site-specific requirements. Professional, practical work attire suitable for commercial field service and safe job-site work is expected.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Richmond, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $58240.00 - $72800.00/yr.

$28-35/hr (if we have anyone over that, it is OK).
