Job Title: Millwright Apprentice – Marine Mechanic
Job Description
The Millwright Apprentice – Marine Mechanic supports the maintenance and repair of commercial vessels by removing and replacing engines, mechanical systems, and fluid systems, and by assisting a lead technician with detailed inspections and repairs. This role focuses on performing technical work on propulsion and steering components, cooling and lubrication systems, and related equipment while maintaining accurate documentation and adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Assist in removing and replacing engines, mechanical systems, and fluid systems on commercial vessels.
Support the performance of TCI/CSI inspections on commercial vessels, including removal and replacement of propellers and shafts, cutlass bearings, packing, dripless seals, and through-hulls and valves.
Help take precise readings of shafts and rudder stocks and assist in identifying corrosion, wear, or damage on these parts.
Install new and add-on marine equipment under the guidance of the lead technician.
Repair and maintain cooling and lubrication systems to ensure optimal vessel performance.
Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on mechanical components and systems.
Keep detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation for all work performed.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving marine technologies, repair methods, and diagnostic techniques.
Follow all safe work practices, procedures, and regulatory requirements while working in shipyard and vessel environments.
Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, reduce turnaround times, and streamline work processes.
Work cooperatively with the lead technician and other team members to deliver high-quality, seamless service to customers.
Assist with physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, and accessing hard-to-reach areas on tugboats, fishing vessels, and barges.
Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members regarding job status, issues, and safety concerns.
Support shipyard operations as needed, including work on mechanical systems in various types of vessels.
Essential Skills
Experience or apprenticeship in marine, ship repair, or marine repair environments, ideally at a 3rd-year apprentice level.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills when diagnosing mechanical issues.
Proven mechanical abilities in hydraulics and electrical systems, including reading schematics and performing diagnostics.
Demonstrated strong safety mindset and adherence to safe work practices.
Ability to take initiative and work effectively with minimal supervision while still supporting a lead technician.
Capability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks in a busy shipyard environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and documenting work.
Physical capability to perform demanding work, including lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in confined or elevated spaces on tugboats, fishing vessels, and barges.
Solid interpersonal skills to work effectively within a diverse team and customer-focused environment.
High level of quality orientation and strong attention to detail in all repair and maintenance activities.
Responsible, accountable, and dependable approach to work, particularly in shipyard and mechanical settings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Electrical experience with 12/24/110 volt systems is an asset.
Previous welding and fabricating experience is an asset.
Confined space training is an asset.
Class 5 forklift ticket is an asset.
Experience or familiarity with shipyard operations and marine mechanical systems is beneficial.

Work Environment
This role operates in a shipyard and marine setting, working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and in and out of vessels on land. You will report to a supervisor and assist a lead technician while working around tugboats, fishing vessels, and barges. The position may require 24/7 availability at times, as well as travel to off-site locations and overtime when needed. Work involves exposure to hazards associated with the marine mechanical trade, including confined spaces and active shipyard operations. Safety equipment such as steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses or goggles, and other protective gear is required in the yard and is provided. The environment is fast-paced, physically demanding, and highly focused on safety, teamwork, and high-quality workmanship.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Richmond, BC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
